What do you guys think is the ideal gearing on a 400ex? I am currently running 14/37 or a 15/37 depending on where i am riding. I hear people talking about going to 16/36, would this help me,or would it be better?

I have run 16/36 only briefly (even though my sig says I have a 16t) out at the dunes, and I didn't care for it there. I still want to try it on the trails. With the 16t sprocket, the shift points really moved around, it was almost like riding an entirely different quad. I think that if you ride on long (like 1 mile +) straigtaways, where you can stay pinned in 5th for a while, the 16t might be the way to go. At the dunes I like 14/36, but have thought of playing around w/ 38,40, & 42 rears. For MX & trail riding, it seems like the stock gearing is pretty spot on (at least for a 416). As I experiment w/ different combos, I can post my thoughts (I am getting a trailtech computer tomorrow, so I can post actual speeds now  ). Let me know what you find out.

i run 15/36 on my quad and i love it, i still have plenty of bottom end, and it gave me a good boost in top speed

15/36 seems to be a good combination with a few mods, stock gearing is good also, just depends where you ride.

I have 16/36 on mine and love it. I also have a 14 tfs. I keep switching them depending on the riding I plan on doing. The 16/36 is great for long rides/harescramble races and I use the 14 tfs for play riding and at the track.

I usually leave the 16 on.. I'd rather have top end speed then the low end power. I wouldn't run 16/36 with a stock machine.. you would run out of power before getting to full speed.

I have experimented with almost ALL the combinations. There is no doubt in my opinion that the stock gearing is the best for me. That was with my 416. With the 505 Im going to try to run 15/36or37!
