Well, it is interesting you ask, because I spent a lot of time this weekend trying to find out what the hot set up is for the YFZ. The stock gearing is 14/38. Most people go to a 15/38 for normal to mx riding. Here is the catch, most pros and people I spoke with this weekend are running like 15/40. The reason for this is that the YFZ motor makes a lot of power in the upper RPM range. Now with this gearing, you would run out of gear in drags fairly quick, but how often do you get anywhere near 5th in an mx race? I am thinking about going back to the stock gearing of 14/38 to get as close to the 15/40 without having to buy a rear sprocket. Good luck.

I have 15/38 and im going to see how it turns out. Anyone with a 15t up front, does the teeth hit your rubber chain guide or no? Mine does.

15/37 is what im running and what all the pros are running, pros wouldnt run 15/40 because that is way too low geared and you would have no top end.

Mike walsh and his team riders and all of his friends are running 15/37.

Sorry, but both Tavis Cain and Jeremiah Jones run 15/40 gearing. Also, Chad Lohr (also with team Duncan) runs 15/40 gearing. I thought it would be too low as well, but according to them, you never hit 5th on the mx track anyway, so they gear it down to stay in the YFZ motor's sweet spot for hp/torque.

What MX track are you riding on? I hit 5th all the time on the track, alot of times its halfway down a strecth where im wishing there was another gear to shift into. Im running 15 38 18tires. I think i may drop to a 36. I dont use 1st and hardly ever second.

Just letting you know what the pros are saying. By the way, I ride Birch Creek, Budds and all the D13 mx tracks and I rarely get out of 4th gear. The YFZ revs to the moon and makes power up there in the rpm range. Maybe on your 400ex you are all over 5th, just relaying the message from them.

PS

The new ATVAction mag has a decription of Gust's, Jeremiah's and Farr's quads, they all run wacky gearing, check it out.

I dont have a 400ex, i know the yfz makes power all the way to the top and i currently have a pretty built motor but top speed still seems to be around 60mph...i think that my problem, i get up to speed quicker than i used to so i run out of gear.

Again, this is what THEY are running, I run about what everyone else is running, either 15/38 or 14/36. Then again, none of us are pros, either.
