I have been considering trying a 16 tooth front sprocket on my 04' 400ex. I am trying to gain some top end to help me hang with the high performance atv's like raptors, etc. Is the 16 tooth front sprocket feesable? do you have to have a hot motor to handle the higher gearing? does it kill acceleration? how much faster does it make it?

Just go buy one and try it. You wont know if you like it till you do. And there cheap so the price shouldn't have you worried.

I plan on doing that, but i was just wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences with one.

i switch between 14-15-16 depending on my riding conditions

but i really like it, it seems like it lets you really pull thru the gear, not just blast thru it

i love mine and my ex is only piped and jetted mod lid at the moment. it really improves performance on high speed trails. i switch between a 13,14,15,16 depending on where i'm riding and whether im running 20's or 22's

I think i will go buy a 14 and a 16 tooth sprocket and just try them out. I am going to buy fairly cheap sprockets at this time and try them out. When i make my decision i will invest in DID or Renthal sprockets, something of that quality. Also, 400rednEX, how much top speed do you expect you gained on the 16 tooth?

when i bought my 400 it had a 16 tooth on it i swithched it back to the 15 because it was a little to much for climbing big hills with no run but i love the top end when its on there im thinking about getting a 36 tooth rear with the 15 front then i will be somewhere inbetween

Do you think a stock bike would keep up with banshees and predators like yours would to an extent?

1st its not that it didnt have the power its just i couldnt slow down enough tword the top of the hill to keep the front end down without killing it
