Does anyone use the 479 web cam I believe it is their stage 2 cam?? I have the all around cam in my 440 but I thought I had the stage 2. I called web cam and they said I would have to get the valve guides shortened with the 479 cam and put in the heavy springs and hardened rockers?? Does anyone have this cam and did you have to do all of these things?? What is involved in the guides getting shortened and how much?? When I got the quad all of this was already done and I was told it had the heavy springs in it..

I have that cam. And I have all of the other things you mention to run it.

I'm not sure whats involved in shortening the valve guides and such.. I had my mechanic do all that.

I'm not sure of the cost, but I wanna say it was $350? to have that done, with oversized valves installed? I could be way off its been quite awhile.

I did all my own motor work but valves I'm to scared to mess with.

I've got the same as Nakomis, ie... all of the above. The shortened valve guides give the necessary retainer to valve seal clearance when using the higher lift 479 cam. The short ones that most co.'s sell are Kibblewhites and are bronze. Stock ones are iron - relatively easy to tell the difference. Hardwelded rockers are really necessary on any welded 400EX cam (which all the 400ex Web cams are). The ramps on the 479 cam are more agressive than your "run of the mill" stage 1 or 2 cams, and it will also make good high rpm power so heavier than stock valve springs would be a good idea (valve and piston run-ins are not).
The Web 450/451 is comparable to most other "stage 2" cams. The 479 has a little less duration, but more lift. Pulls noticeably harder down low and in the mid, top is atleast as good. A good cylinder port job and a carb will make either one "shine"
P.S. I've tried both and like the 479 much better. The 450/451 requires you to keep the r's up at all times. The 479 can still "tractor" out of situations and pulls hard "across the board".
JMO of course.

ditch the 479 and the 450/451 and get the 463/9i it is the best cam by far that web makes.

Im not 100% sure but I think so...:( I was told to get it done, so I did it.
If I was looking for a drop in cam I would get a HRC cam.

I also have the Web 479 cam.
And I agree with what Mike400ex said about the 479.
Good luck!!
