I just got a new 450r this weekend and have only got to ride it alittle. I have a few questons for all of youns with a 450r.

1. Are they supposed to idel so fast? I turned mine down. Is this bad?

2. After its broke in would Mobil 1 red cap (15w-50) be a good choice for oil?

3. How often should I change the tranny oil? (what should I run)

4. I want to gear it down to near stock 400ex gearing for trail riding. Would a 12 or 13 tooth sprocket be what I want?

Thank in advance

1. IMO it idls fast so the headlight wont sputter, and keep it bright and a solid beam. u can adjust it down but when i tried that on mine the headlight blinked and fluttered.

I would have to say run the oil that Honda suggests and change your tranny fluid according to the service schedule in your owners book. You shouldve gotten x amount of oil changes included with the purchase. I get mine changed every 20 hours plus an additional 12 x's per year as part of my extended warranty.

13 tooth made a huge difference, I would recommend it.

Hey avaloncon2 i just put my 13 t but i havent tested it yet because it has paddles on and its on a trailer right now. SO im just gonna wait tell i get to sand lake next. But how do you like it, how much quicker is it, is there anything else that you would like to share about it? Oh and you know how it sits on the rubber gide thingy is it ok if it does that, will that slow me down!

I plan on going with Mobil 1 15W50(red cap) on mine. I used it in the 400EX and also my bike.
I would change the tranny oil the same time you change the motor side. For now I am using the Honda gear oil.
A 13 tooth sprocket probably won't get you down to what the 400 is but it feels about right for me. I think a 12 tooth might be too much....you will run out of gear quick.

Shoutout to those of you going to sandlake on 4/17. I'll be there for the first time on my new 450r, give me some discriptions of your quads and I'll keep an eye out for you. Would like to meet a few of ya from the NW, specifically Oregon

as far as the 13 tooth front sproket do you guys think that would be good for mx?? or do you think it would take too much away from top end??

If your running 18 inch rear tires you shouldn't need the 13 tooth sprocket. If it really feels nessary with the 18's go with a 39 tooth rear. Hope this helps.

Ive used aftermarket oils in a lot of my past bikes. Used some nice royal purple in my old drag raptor.

But the 450r is a different story. On the tranny side you can use the regular gold bottle no poly oil, or the honda gear oil in the red bottles that have the pointy cap (the best stuff you can use for any gear oil in any bike) A lot of my friend that have drag banshee's use that gear oil.

The crank side is a question for me too. Right now I jsut run honda's oil. I know its more of a race oil than the regular GN4, and its made specifically for the bike. I would say to stay with it for now. Maybe if you do a lot of motor mods it might be wise to change to a different brand. But when theres an oil made specifically for that motor, it would be retarded to not use it.

Its like the race fuel argument, if your bikes mostly stock its just going to make you run worse.

I copied some info from a sprocket/tire/rpms prog for the 450r and posted it on some of my friends webspace. You can check it out here (http://www.kg4vpv.com/~ncliborne/450r.htm)

Manny, I think it feels more like the gearing on my 400 that I was used too. I had it at the track last weekend for the first time. I
only used the stock sprocket for the breakin so I really dont have that much to compare it too. It felt tall in stock form so I didnt wait , I made the change right away. My 400 is also minus one tooth in the front.
