go with the 450r. Stock its probably faster than your 416. With exhaust theres no contest. The difference between the two bikes is like night and day. Yeah the handling on the 450r isnt perfect. but because of the shocks, its a lot better than the 400ex. The only ting the 400ex has thats better than the 450r is the low center of gravity. I dont count the elec start because i still stand by my word of saying that I love the kick start. Hasnt given me any trouble at all. The only time i ever had to kick it more than three times was when i left the key turned off.

Ever owned a 2 stroke? My Polaris Scrambler 400 was add gas and 2 stroke oil and nothing else. Other than grease the fittings and chain it was almost zero maintance.

The engine oil drain bolt is on the bottom of the bike just like a car. The transmission is on the right side below the end of the rear brake lever.

FYI to change the tranny fluid you need to start the bike and let it idle for a few minutes 3-5 and then shut it off and open the drain plug. There isn't much too it really.

I got to ride my uncles 450R today, the comparison of it to my 400EX is like night and day .....speed wise.. i was a little let down on how it handled, i think my 400EX handles a little better, could be because of the power difference though. And honestly....i hate to say it cuz Im a Honda rider thru & thru but I think the YFZ is overall a better bike

SELL THE 400EX AND GET THE 450R.
IT HAS AWSOME POWER BUT NOT AS GOOD IN HANDLING WISE BUT U CAN CORRECT THAT WITH AFTERMARKET. ITS A LITTLE TIPPY BUT ITS NOT LIKE A RAPTOR ITS MORE LIKE A Z400 BUT YOU JUST GOT TO LEARN TO LEAN THEN YOU SHOULDNT HAVE THE PROBLEM.

IN POWER WISE A 400EX WILL PROBABLY NEVER BE AS QUICK AS THE 450R(INSTOCKFORM) IN ALL AREAS.

IN COMPARSION WITH THE YFZ, THE TRX IS ALOT EASIER TO RIDE. THE YFZ IS MADE FOR THE RACER WHILE THE TRX IS MADE FOR LIKE TRAIL RIDING SO YOU PROBABLY HAVE TO GET AFTERMARKET TO BRING IT UP TO THE POWER OF THE YFZS.

MAINTAINENCE IS REAL EASY ITS ALMOST AS EASY AS THE 400EX
NEVER HAD A PROBLEM YET WITH THE R. I LOVE IT!!!!!

what about rebuilding 2 strokes every other month at the minimum. yeah its only about 120 bucks and takes an hour of your time but in a year thats 720 dollars that could of been put in the motor or somewhere else on the bike. and i hate pre mixing gas, and by the way a slowairis does not count. and having the all mighty 2stroke (banshee) what about keeping the timing down on the carbs or whenever you do buy parts for it, its double.

i dont know about rebuilding a 2 stroke every month. Maybe on a race schedule. My old 86 atc 250r was on its original piston and rings until 2002. It only needed to be taken apart cause the base and head gaskets where starting to leak. I went one over on the piston to freshen it up. I think its a matter of proper mixing of oil and gas, not beating the snot out of it and cleaning the air filter regularly.

i ride them hard, thats what they are made for. an old piston and a fresh top end is like nite and day!and you can do on a stock piston and rings for a long time but once you break it open you got to do it all the time fot the rest of the bikes life. then you have to clean the cylinder out after rebuilding it a whole bunch. and ive tried all mixtures.

BTW a 400ex has two oil drains also.

I like the idea of the engine one being on the bottom. My CRF450 is on the side and I had to notch the my frame so I can get it out. Of course I didn't know that until after I had it powdercoated, woops.

allmixedup047,
I don't know what you are smoking but I don't know anyone that goes through a topend in one month. My TRX250R is just now getting it's first bore. I love two stokes and as long as you have proper jetting and oil mixture their maint. is just the same as a four stroke. I would rather have the balls to the walls feeling of a two stoke anyday:D

a 250r is a great bike! i really think the 250r was the best bike to ever hit the market, no it wasnt the fastes 250 but it was obviously the best because its the only one you see anymore.
wish i could have one, but with all the new laws coming out i really think 2 stokes are going to have to be put up, 06 is the target year for the last banshees.
