i am in the need of a compressor at my house. i need it to be 110V though. also, i want to have enough power to remove most nuts, bolts, and lug nuts on a vehicle. i won't be using this on a huge moster truck or anything like that though. i am not sure what brand, what size motor, what size tank, or what specs to get. i will be getting a stand up not one that lays down. i would like this to be able to paint too, so i need it to run at a constant psi needed for painting. any suggestions would be great. cal

You will need at least a 5 HP 25 gallon for your needs. As far as brand, they're all pretty much the same. There are only a couple of major manufacturers out there - Campbell Hausfeld, DeVillbiss, Coleman, etc. You can't go wrong with a Craftsman. I just got a steal on a 60 gallon 8 HP upright unit from my uncle (he's moving and can't take it with). 220V though, so I'm in the process of running the electrical right now.

I've got a 5 horse/25 gal and it has served me well but if I had it to do again, I think I would go with a two-stage 175psi model. When I'm using the die grinder or cut-off wheel, it just runs too much. I also prefer the oil type compressor. It just makes me uncomfortable having a piston in a cylinder with no oil!

Northern Tool has an Ingersol-Rand that would probably fit your needs. #1592048-1405

It aint big enough. Youll be sorry;) You need a minimun 60 gal upright with a five horse motor to fill your needs. If you want to run anything associated with bodywork,(d/a, sandblast cabinet, paint gun) you will be sorry if you go smaller. The harder the compresor works to keep up, the hotter the air comming out will be. This will lead to more water in the air and poor finish. (not to mention expidited wear of the compressor and tools.
Dont settle for less than a 9.0CFM compressor for light hobby needs.
And dont buy one of them damn oil-less compressors either! they are to friggon noisy, you'll drive yourself baty running it in the garage.

He wants it to operate on 110v, that limits the size. Call in the electrician!!!!!

Yah, your right it does make for a very short list of choices. But its preety cheap to put in a 240v outlet in the garage. If there is room in the panel, you can buy all the stuff at HomeDepot and install the outlet yourself for less than fifty bucks.

i got a craftsman 30 gal 6 hp (or 5, dont remember offhand) it does well when just using the impact or the air ratched but once i plug in the die grinder i dont have too much time before i drain a full tank. Yes, this is the oiless pump and it is very noisy, but doesnt bother me too much. It was only 270 bucks too.

well i ended up getting the craftsman professional series. it has a 25 gallon tank, which should work fine for me. however, my dad picked me up a hose and he got me 1/2 inch. is this ok or will it be a detriment from its size?? i can still take it back if a 3/8 would work better for running an impact but if they will both work equally, i will keep it. any help would be great.

thats what ours is like, except the tank is a bit bigger, ours is 8hp i think, maybe 10

It's hella old school, it fills really fast too .

1/2" hose is overkill. I would go back to 3/8", less bulk and more flexable....

that is what i was wondering. i am actually more interested in how the impact performs than the bulkiness but i will take everything into account. thanks
