ahhh the balisong...i am very familiar with that weapon.

my Dad is freakin awesome with one of those.

from Balisong.net:

Balisong is the name of the famous Filipino "butterfly knife". Balisong is a tagalog (Filipino dialect) word, originated from the Batangas province (south of Manila, Philippines islands). This word is less ambiguous than "butterfly knife" which is also the name of Wing Chun weapons. Balisong means "broken horn" and refers to the mobile handle which protect the blade when closed. The balisong was the first knife which could be opened with one hand, very quickly.

btw - yes i am Filipino :D

I guarantee you mate, the shorter one's just as quick as any knife. 420 stainless steel, full tang, cast aluminum hilt.

don't have to tell me, i am quite familiar with Japanese weaponry :D

actually, the wakizashi was carried to be used as a sword, not as a knife. that was the tanto's job.

samurai carried the wakizashi for when they were dismounted and had to enter a building since the katana and daikatana were considered to long to be effectively used in close quarters fighting such as inside a building.

uh, daikatana?

that means Time-Katana you know that right?

a daikatana was longer than a katana. when carrying a daikatana a samurai usually didn't carry any other weapon.

i guess equate it to the European greatsword.

i found a store that was actually selling a masamune replica sword. it was pretty amazing. it had a 60 inch overall length. amazing blade.

even a replica would cost a pretty penny :)

got a link? i would love to check the sword out.

okay, do you know how good zinc handles are? I've never used one before and I'm looking at a sword now that has a full 420 stainless blade but the handle is powder coated zinc. any clue how that would hold up?

batgeek

zinc is mainly used for decorative swords.

it oxidizes very easy, especially when handled often.

for a functional Japanese sword i prefer wood(Japanese maple, rattan, or rosewood) over metal. bones are very nice also :D

RMX500

but if the zinc alloy is powder coated.. thus protected from common oxidants would it be functional?

batgeek

yeah, i would say it would be.

very pretty too. though the only complaint i would have to say would be balance. lighter materials were usually used in the hilt for that purpose. though if the blade was of dense steel, or long enough, it would not throw off the balance of the weapon.

RMX500

the blade is a 36 inch full tang.

i'd have to hold the weapon in my hand to fully assess the feel of it :)

hehe, yer making me feel like breaking out my sword collection when i get home just to play with them.

my favorites are a pair of Dao swords...i used to do forms with them in IWUF back when i was younger. second favorite is a replica of a Moorish scimitar. the balance in that weapon is amazing!

so do you have msn or something you use at home?

batgeek
04-07-2004, 12:16 AM
no not really, my home machines are used strictly for on-line gaming and with those services active, whenever i get a message they tend to throw me out of my game, so i never really liked them.

i'm easy to reach on here or at AtvNC.com though :D

would you believe i had an actual functional Klingon bat'leth...an interesting weapon and quite elegant in design.

my ex-friend had a katana and he let me play with it and i chopped his mattress in half.

I had an ivory handled stainless 8 inch knife, i put it in my friends field car, and i keep asking him where it is, he wont tell me, i think hes trying to steal it from me. ill never forget about it, its stoner bashing time.

that's cool considering even a razor edged sword can't cut a matress in half unless you wielded it at like 30 meters per second with a slashing motion in the strike.
