the upgrade is very expensive, but it might never break.

all raptors made before 2001 had the ***ty tranny's. they now sell the 2001 transmission setup for the earlier raptors for around $650. My cousin just ripped second gear out of his 2000 raptor and now shifts from 1st to 3rd all the time.

Side note: I don't know if all raptors are plagued with problems, but my cousin's raptor has had every possible problem you can think of. I know they fixed some things with the newer models, but I would not buy anything older than a 2001 raptor for sure!!
He now wants a 450r simply for the Honda reliablility factor!

the first raptors were the year 2001 models...it would be hard to get one that was made before then...everything is made half *** on those POS'....everything on my friends 2003 has broken now & he wound up just throwing it away

Stick with honda unless you like fixing things all the time.. the yfz450 is the only yamaha iv'e seen that gives honda a run for its money....the utility's all fall apart & so do the rest of their sport quads (except the very slow, outdated & heavy warrior that is bulletproof)

I think his problem is that his Raptor doesn't exist:huh Considering that they came out in 2001...I would never get a raptor, from what I've heard about their tranny and being top heavy.

This retard that goes to my school sold his Banshee frame for $1275 (worth about 50 bucks, I'm not kidding either) and is buying a Raptor. The kid has an IQ of about 80 (not kidding), 5'4" and about 100-110 lbs with no muscle. I can't wait until he dies from rolling it over on himself, everyone hates him:D

I thought of buying a 400ex but they have no reverse. I drove a raptor and fell in love with the power. I would get a new 450 but too much money. im selling m 250ex and my 1977 ford f-150. my dads friend owns a company called DJ towing and is giving me a 93 bronco if I mow his lawn. i can get a raptor for around 4400. I am for sure getting a 02 or newer. my dads friends all have them and none of them have had any problems they just are allways are adjusting the valves. BUt that dont bother me. Im 14 and weigh 145. But I am very experienced and have drove plenty of big quads. I cant stand this little 250 any longer. its to damn slow

its not that the raptor in general is crap ( except the 01's ) it just takes MORE maintance to keep em running good. not all yamaha quads are crap. the blaster is a great begginner quad and intermediate. The warrior is just a beast. those things a great for that trail rider, the yfz.. well we all know about that, and the banshee is the same as the raptor, have more patients and a good time to keep things in tip top shape and they'll last.

or just get a honda and not even worry about it if u forget to check something :p

thats funny..

you talk about raptors reliability being bad, then you bring up the 'all reliable blaster'

I've owned my 01 Rappy since January of 2001. And mine's been perfectly reliable. No broken tranny's(however I did upgrade to an 02 set along with the 727) and no broken starter clutches. She even has the original battery still cranking over her 105mm 12.5:1 piston.

My advise would be to buy an 02 or newer, however. Just to avoid possible trans problems.

Two words of advise for trans and starter longevity: Be easy and smooth while going from reverse to first, and don't start them in gear. Follow these, and yours will be as trouble free as mine.

As for frequent valve adjustments, I do mine about twice a year. And most of the time they require little or no adjustment.

what kind of riding do you do? if you really want reverse and reliability then i would suggest a warroir i mean yea the raptor is alot fast and has reverse but the warrior has been around for so long and its bulletproof and its a great trail bike. but hey get whatever you want its your money both are great bikes and i am sure youll be happy with either.

I do alot of trail riding and sand dunes. Ive heard raptors are realible bikes too. 3 of my dads friends have them and have had no problems. Plus my dad will want to drive it and he said im not buying anything without reverse. tomarrow im going to test drive one.:eek2:
