I plan on doing a 416 kit on my 03 400. Along with the 10.8-1 piston kit I am porting and polishing the head and adding a xr 400 cam and rejetting. What kind of gains are we talking for somithing like this and what would this do for reliability? Its nice to know people that tell me bring this much and a case of beer and we'll get it done. Does $500 sound too much?

Are you buying a 416 kit? Cause like lrd has one but its $4 hundred something and i dont think $500 will be enough unless you do the labor your self cause with a piston gaskets ported head and a cam would be alot of labor, but if you do it your self and just buy a piston and get your cyliner bored and ported and the cam in your self and not buy a kit like lrd or anything you should have enough money easy.

BTW I have a 416 and it is very reliable, and i am getting a cam soon:)

You will love the gains from that combo. I swapped out my xr400 cam for an HRC over the winter, along with the head porting, and the only thing I can say is Holy Sh*t! Keep in mind I also have an FCR39 on mine, but I don't think you will be upset with the wake up that your EX gets. The install of everything is not much of a problem at all. But have someone who knows what they are doing to do the porting and boring, not just some guys who says "yeah, i've done that once". If you do the install yourself, and have someone else do the boring and porting, $500 will definitely be enough. If you want to, I can save you a few bucks and sell you my xr400 cam (it was only used for a season and a half). Do some research on the cam though, the xr400 is supposed to be pretty close in spec to the stock cam. You may want to look into a different cam that may be more agressive.

416's flat out rip! Many of my friends have gone this way with their 400's....and it is like a new quad. The 416 kit really wakes up the 400. I am very impressed with the gains I have felt.

Now...I just need to do this to my ride.:p

I'm running 416 with a 12.5:1 piston now for a little over 6 mos. and still strong.

PRetty much the same thing I have done to mine. YOu'll notice a nice gain in power. $500 sounds kinda high though.

We are doing the work ourselves and I am going with a honda piston vs a je or wiseco. I've seen three je crack at the piston pin and a wiseco crack at the ring lands and the guy doing the work has done alot of porting on his four wheelers. Hes got the 416 in his 01with a honda piston and xr cam. I was saying 500 because I might go with a stage one plus we are rejetting removing the choke and the work on the top end.

Done one and am very happy with it, She rocks, bang 4 buck, I don't think anyone can argue any-other size for the money....spanked a Piped Banshee, Z400, and best of a all a Raptor...take your time ,do it right , get a manual, ask everyone who knows anything about it(major engine buiders) get the fact's and do it;) :D :macho

HOnda makes larger pistons than stock ones:confused:

Also there's nothing wrong with JE or wiseco pistons.

Mine made 33.5 RWHP on Kenz Dynojet dyno. I have since added a K&N over the Uni, and swiss-cheesed the airbox. So I'm guessing it's in the 34-35 RWHP range now. Mods are in my signature.

She's been going for 1 1/2 years now. Trouble free on 91 octane.
