I have run 89 with no problems, Are you running a timing advance key?

the timing key doesn't work that great with a high compression piston thats what it says on Sparks site. Mine will Ping when its under a load when i'm ran 93. Now I run straight 100, but have mixed 100 and 93 and that fixed it. :D

Whats your elevation? That makes a difference on what you can run. The higher the elevation the thinner the air. Thats probably why Mustang can run 89. I'd try a 50/50 (92/Race gas)mix in it and see how she runs.

What does the pinging actually sound like. I have an 11:1 je 426, no base gasket so its prolly around 10.8:1 i guess. My engine sometimes makes a wierd noise when i lug it , way more than when it was stock. Could this be pinging?

Some pinging can be cause by lean jetting and you not knowing it. It causes the cylinder to heat up to much and pre-detonate the gas and gives a pinging sound...Theres more to it then that but that could be part of it.
