View Full Version : Groupbuy interest in Ross pistons

Silverfox@C&DRacing

I would like to know if you people would be interested in a group buy on the ross piston kits. There would have to be a minimum of 20 pistons sold and the order would go in all at the same time.
This would only be on 400ex pistons from std to 89mm
The price would be $105 for the std,406,416,426 with out sleeve. That would include piston, rings, circlips, and piston pin. I am still working on the 440 kit price and the 426with sleeve price.

If I get some good feedback then we will do this for you members.

I would be interested in a 416. Could it be a 10.8 comp piston or is it only for 11.0 comp or........?

Sounds like we have some interest.

As for freight You will be charged what I get charged from UPS. If you are in Canada I will ship through the post office.

Those are the compression ratios that ross offers.

if you are needing gaskets add $40 for the cometic steel flex gasket kit.

if you are needing a cam we will offer the Hotcam stg 1 or 2 for $120

We recommend with the 426 that you resleeve the cylinder

We will offer the 440 and 426 kit with sleeve and gaskets for $210

I will start taking orders now 4-7-04 and end on 4-21-04 so that I can ship the pistons to you on 4-28 or 4-29

REMEMBER WE MUST HAVE 20 OR MORE PISTONS SOLD

This is only for the 400ex also

Why does everyone like the 416 so much? Whats the difference in performance between the 416 and the 440 kits? I will prolly end up buying one also.

quadkrazy400ex
04-08-2004, 07:57 AM
because the 416 is reliable and gives you awesome power over stock. if you go with the 440, the cylinder walls will be thinner than the 416, causing overheating problems. along with that you risk pulling the studs.

Quadzilla

Some of you may want to think about ordering the lighter, stronger optional pin for the piston. Lighter pin = less mass which = quicker reving.

From Ross's site:

ROSS has the ultimate in strong, light, high quality tool steel pins which are 20% stronger then the more common H-11 pins.

CAUTION: The use of tool steel pins which are too thin can cause broken rod eyes and cracked piston pin bosses. Under no circumstances should pins of less than .120 wall thickness be used in circle track cars or other endurance applications. Do not use tool steel pins in a press fit or street application.

Braff1
04-13-2004, 05:33 AM
As a rule of thumb it is better to replace the head gasket any time you pull the head off. When you tighten the head down it will crush into the gasket making a seal. If you try to reuse the gasket it may not line up perfectly and leak or blow out.

cals400ex
04-13-2004, 09:37 AM
i assume this deal doens't include higher compression pistons?? if i could get somewhere around a 12:1-12.5:1 426 or so i would be interested.

Silverfox@C&DRacing

sorry Ross doesn't offer higher than 11.2
the only thing would be the JE in a 12.:1 416 or a 13:1 in a 426 you would have to get a stronger rod and run race fuel.

do you have to use that gasket set to get the right compression or can i just go to my local dealer and get the two gaskets i need. also about how much is it to get the sleeve bored

Braff1
04-14-2004, 05:44 AM
when you get your piston, take the cylinder to your local machine shop and have them bore the cylinder to the size of the piston. This will ensure a good fit.

if you want the listed ratio, you will need the thinner gaskets from what i read unless ross pistons are different from others. however, xr 400 gaskets would work better than stock to raise the compression a bit.

3x440ex
04-14-2004, 02:35 PM
I spoke with silverfox on the phone and she said if you buy the thinner gaskets for the 416 it would raise the compression to 11.2 to 1 she thought that is what ross told her.

if that is the case then ross builds their pistons for a 400ex and not the xr 400 or the ratings would be too high when put in the xr400. i am not sure though.

04-14-2004, 11:05 PM
guys read under tech articles from mikckey dunlop about installing sleeves and compression ratios that will help explain what is recquired for each kit ie how much ya can bore stock or what the compresion ratio ends up at just a piece of advice

nikejoe
04-15-2004, 07:19 AM
Silverfox,
Is the gasket kit a thin enough gasket to give you the true compression ratios. What about an xr400 gasket? How much would it be? I just want to make sure I will be getting the correct one to give me advertised compression ratios. Also how many orders do you have now? I should be placing mine tomorrow for a 416. But how many do you have in hand? Thank You!

Quadzilla
04-15-2004, 07:56 AM
I am certainly not calling Silver a liar (so PLEASE don't take it that way), but when I called Ross to order my piston, Ispoke to "Honda Jim" who is in charge of their motorcycle pistons. He told me at that time (3 months ago) that the piston compression was rated for the XR's and that I would have to use XR gaskets to get the advertised compression ratio. Maybe this has changed in the past 3 months, not sure. I went to Ross's website and looked at their online catalog. There is no listing for an EX piston, just XR which would lead me to believe that they are the same piston which substantiates my conversation with Jim.

The only "wildcard" could be that the Cometic gaskets could effect this. Dusty told me that they come in regular and thin sizes. If the "thin" is thinner than an stock XR gasket, this could raise the compression to higher than advertised on the piston. Does anybody here know if the thin Cometics are thinner than a stock XR gasket? Thanks!

Silverfox@C&DRacing
04-15-2004, 09:14 AM
We have the cometic custom made and they are thinner than the xr gaskets.

Colby@C&DRacing
04-15-2004, 09:26 AM
The thinner head gaskets that I sell are thinner than the xr gaskets by 8 thousands and 18 thousands thinner than the 400ex gasket. I also provide a thinner base gasket to change the squish area for better burn and cooling this also helps to raise the compression the base is 8 thousands thinner than stock. So yes with our thinner gasket kit you will have more than the advertised comp ratio.

thejeepdude
04-15-2004, 09:46 AM
Colby, so with those thin gaskets and the 416 piston, is pump gas still feasible? All we have in CA is 91. Or is 93+ required?

Colby@C&DRacing
04-15-2004, 09:57 AM
I would not recommend pump gas with the thinner gaskets at your location you are close to sea level and need better fuel. I recommend nothing less than premium fuel for any of these pistons but requirements are different for each bike due to conditions and altitude

If you are interested in the lighter pin for the Ross pistons, here is the part number:

787-10-23c

Dimensions .787x.100x2.350

"Honda Jim" at Ross says that is saves about 10 grams (or maybe it was 5 grams not sure, he said about the weight of 2 - nickles out of your pocket) vs the one that comes with the piston and is stronger. I got one :-)))

Don't know because I paid for it along with a bunch of other parts (piston, cam, etc ,etc) and labor (boring, porting, disassembly, assembly, etc) all in one lump sum and a couple of trades, etc. Not your everyday deal. I traded him 1 PW 50 and one TriZinger 60 that both needed a fair amount of TLC and a little cash to make this happen. He did not itemize the bill for me so I don't know what I or he paid for it. Call Ross and they will tell you.

guys, the orders are going thru. they are just a little busy and tied up with some things. i'm sure they will come on and tell what is going on and when they plan on shipping. they will take care of you. :)

I have been contimplating weather or not to go ahead with this. There were 18 pistons sold and 3 people backed out (and I wonder why I cringe when we offer group buys). I don't want to leave the people that did participate hanging so we will go ahead and get them ordered.

Thanks Cal for settling them down, I have been under the weather or should I say loopy from the pain medicine from my broken arm. I did not forget about you just trying to decide what to do since we did not sell 20 pistons.

Thanks for asking, I think it felt better before they put pins in it. I go to the doctor on Wednesday to see what they actually did to me. (I have no idea I was druged and put under :huh )

We are very busy people if you need information that bad then call the phone # at the top of the page.

You need you appreciate that this group buy even went through, as stated we needed 20 pistons sold and only 15 were purchased we picked up the rest so that the members could benefit from the savings.

I was under the assumption that Ross would ship all of them at once I recieved 7 pistons and those that did not order gaskets have gotten theirs, cometic is behind on gasket production which has delayed shipping of the pistons. I hope to ship them early this week.

I would like to thank those that are being patient

Here is another update

Looks like the rest of the pistons will be here wednesday or thursday and same with the gaskets as soon as they show up they will be shipped.

Since this has taken longer than expected those of you that ordered piston, gaskets and or cam will receive free freight and those of you that have other items we will cover half of the freight.

Thanks again for being patient.

Thats really cool you guys are doing that.

If its not to late I might get in on this as long as I could get the piston pretty quick.

I also am late on this offer. If its still possible, I would like a 14:1 piston, and a pair of cams for my Yfz.

This is an old thread I don't think we will get 20 pistons sold right now but we may look into doing another group buy on piston kits more towards winter.

But if you are needing piston kits now don't hesitate to call.
