yes and no. the clutch should be replaced at normal intervals but the wear you are seeing is normal.

its always possible that the fibers are from gear mesh or another mechanical issue but i'd say its not. keep the clutch adjusted, your oil changed and dont sweat it until you see chunks hitting the oil pan..lol;)

hahah no...i was being wimsical.

you should change your clutch when you notice it slipping under power or increased chatter at low rpm. anything more then grit in the oil needs to be investigated. next time you change the oil run your finger in the draining oil, and rub your fingers together. you should feel the grit usually associated with clucth fibers deterorating.

also, invest in a drain plug that has a magnatized end. it will collect those fibers and keep them from re circulating thru your engine

you can buy a drain plug for your quad that has the tip magnatized. this gathers the small metal particles from your oil.

there are a few for sirtbikes in rocky mountains magazine...rockymountainatv.com will the xr400's stock oil plug fit on the 400ex's? also, how do you change out the crush washer thing on the drain plug?

C&D can get cool ones. the one i ordered for the oil tank didn't fit perfectly though. you can force it a bit and it will work but i opted not too. i am running a magnetic one on the side of the engine though. these are anodized so they look cool. however, they are not cheap. i think i paid about $18 a piece for these. these magnets are suppose to be 5 times stronger than the normal magnetic drain plug magnets though. i iwill probably try to find one to fit the tank. i may hit napa or something similar to see what i can find.

well, i must of pmed someone else.

well just call up C&D racing (308-696-7805) and ask dusty what i (cals400ex) ordered. she knows me and will know which one i am using. i don't actually remember the name of it off the top of my head. the one on the engine is anodized red. the one on the tank is anodized blue. however, the one on the tank didn't fit properly so i sent it back. it was close but not the exact same as the stock threads. some people just put it on using a little effort but i didn't. these have strong magnets in them too.
