dump the clutch and let it go.. it's really hard to go all the way back and hit your bar / pipe unless you try to.
just give it gas and when you get up .. try and find your balance point.

^^^yea and so does my 400. that was the stupidest post ive seen southbeach.
as for your pipe sticking out past the grab bar, if you do wheelies it WILL scrape sooner or later. id try to either make a longer grab bar or cut down the pipe if your that worried about it.;)

first off it is harder to do a wheelie in first gear than it is if you start it off in second or third by dumping the clutch while you are all over the gas. once you find your balancing point (your stomach will let you know when you are too far back) just feather the gas to keep it there. always remember to keep your foot on the rear brake in case you get too far back you can just hit it and set the bike down. start off in grassy flat fields and wear a helmet because you will come off the back of it since you are trying to learn how. when you get good at it you will learn how to shift all the way to 5th gear with the front wheels never touching the ground.:D

I agree with the first part, but I don't know about dumping the clutch to get it up, I'd just give it some gas and pull on the bars.

...wow... the intelligence is overwhelming:D
just playing, what's with all of these threads lately? "Getting a raptor in reverse" "getting the front end off of the ground".
Come on guys, I'm not trying to be mean here but if half of you spent as much time riding as you do typing you'd be pro riders. With a stock ex you should be able to pull the front end off the ground in 4th gear, with a simple slip on 5th standing on the pegs. It is scary at first, just don't be afraid of crashing, why try to avoid the inevitable if you're going to try to gain any respect you gotta be willing to sacrifice. Practice makes perfect. Sorry for being harsh:(

Are you guys talking about shifting up to 4th starting from 2nd? or accually riding in 4th, dropping the clutch and pulling it up?-darren

I'm sure thet are talking about riding in 4th and pulling it up. And I'm pretty sure you don't need to even slip the clutch.
I can pull up my Z400 in 5th gear, flat pavement, no clutch. So a 400EX should have no problem doing it in 4th or even 5th (Don't know, never rode one)

400ex's can pop wheelies in 5th gear w/ no clutch, its harder than **** but it can be done.
