well me and mark26(my friend) had to build a bridge of out 1/8 inch balsa wood... the bridge was about 2ft long 1ft high and 2 1/2 inches wide... i designed the bridge on a model program myself...

then we put it under a ram... the ram was powered by a air compressor to put weight onto the bridge... it put up to 120 psi on the bridge which is right around 350lbs:eek2:

the bridge was sitting on ceramic tile and it shattered the ceramic tile that the bridge was setting on... it held and never cracked (the only bridge to do it outta 15 the next closest was 315lbs) ours didn't even budge at 350lbs... the air compressor just couldn't get any more psi out... that means me and mark could sit on the bridge without it breaking!

heres a picture of the bridge at my house... i figured i'd post about this and see if anyone has ever done anything like this... its actually pretty cool to do:macho

its amazing this thing will hold over 350lbs with on problem... it only weights 100grams!!!

that is pretty neat...

I must say, it looks like it was built for some serious weight!

Good job Tommy!

The funny part about physics is tom and i sit there and basically do nothing. then you get all these kids who spend hours studying and are always sucking up and when it came down to break the bridges we beat the junior valedictorian and senior valedictorian.

WE have a class like that....I hope your class isnt physics you do that in. our physics is twice as hard. we have a class called engineering.

We have built a tower that is 6 inches tall has to fit in a 4 inch round circle and we build it out of balsa wood some of ours held like 300 pounds. The bridges we built were never that big and onle held like 100 pounds.

we just finished making cranes out of balsa wood. it was really sweet. if i can get some pictures of our projects i will try to post them.

right now we are building a scale house out of 2x4 balsa wood with headers and everything just like a real house but at a smaller scale...

The best thing about the class is the teacher he is the coolest teacher ever.

I actually did that project in the 7th grade but with toothpix. not as strong as that though and I didnt win with the strongest bridge.

That cool Tommy! We did something like that but made it out of rolled up newspaper. It did not hold anywhere near that amount of weight but was still pretty cool.

did it in seventh grade but we didnt get that much wood. i knew i shoulda kept it

I built one also. Held 106 lbs but it was nowhere as big as yours. Ill see if I can find a pic of it around here somewhere.

rico just think it could hold alot of beer on it:blah:

i honestly think this bridge would hold over 400+lbs... it really didn't even flex under the 350lbs... some of the bridges start twisting etc... but ours just sorta sat there...

it was really cool thou when it cracked the ceramic tile below it... 350lbs over a 1/8 inch thick strip of wood is alot of weight per sq inch... my teacher was like :eek2:

and yes i do sleep in that class... its super easy for me... i get my 92% (A) and sleep the rest:macho

I made one like that a few years ago in tech ed. Then I burned it :D

I would be doing that this year, but the school messed up and i got art instead of cad 2. Thats really good i think we have only got up to 150 lbs at my school, maybe a little more but i know it was nowhere near your wieght tho.

i did that in my C.A.D. class, i designed a bridge but we had a limited amount of wood it could only be 15 in long 3 wide sub structure could only be 2 inches tall and superstructure could only be 3 in, we didnt have alot of wood, but we hung wieights from the bottom of them and mine and my friends held the most weight out of the school with those set limits

we had 20ft of wood i think... i can't remember exactly...

the only other set limit was it had to weigh under 120 grams... most bridges held in the 250 range... the lowest was 175...

In one of my classes when had to design a bridge on the computer..then build it on a prgram called Inventor..then build the bridge out of sheet metal
