View Full Version : How good/reliable are Chevrolet Avalanches?

My mom is buying one today (if she likes it and it's in good condition) were gonna go look at it after school. But I was just curious, how good are they? They look like their pretty durable.
Just her last vechile, Buick Lumina....it was a good car, but it's really hard on suspension/breaks (like she just got her left rear strut fixed, new shocks put on, and the front right bearing fixed) and she had to get that done every year....then when she got home I had rolled down my window and I heard this really weird clicking sound comin from the rear wheels....:huh. They goofed up on something...but the car's just not really fit to drive no more.
I was jus wonderin is there any problems like that with an Avalanche truck??

I would get one with all that plastics crap off, My buddy has a white one without all that plastic on there with 26's, it looks clean!

I have the 02 avalanche. I think the plastic is nice to have don't have to worry about the door dings and rocks chewing the paint off (I live on 1 mile of gravel roads). I have had pretty good luck with mine I was kind of diasppointed with the gas milage around 12-13 now I am getting 15 mpg. I did have to replace the rearend in my about 3 weeks ago, probably just a fluke thing.

All in all I think it is a good vehicle.

When using it as a pickup, isn't the back of the cab open? That would be nice in the winter or a downpour.

Haha...sounds like there isn't too much positive feedback here/good things bout em...:p But too bad, she went out and bought one tonight

It's an 02, but it only had like 18,000 kms on it. She paid about $27,500 Can. for it (we went and looked at an 04' that wasn't nearly as nice lookin, brand new, $47,000 can.) Leather interior and crap. I will admit, they rn't the prettiest lookin truck thing....but it rides nice & it's really nice inside! I honestly don't know why she got it...cuz it's not like she's haulin quads or nothing, she just wanted a "good quality" 4x4. But ah well...her vechile, not mine:blah:

not sure about the Av's and their little quirks, but I have a Silverado with the same running gear (motor and tranny) and I can say the 5.3 is a great motor. No tranny problems or 4x4 problems either... so I'd say it would be a solid truck.. speaking about the drivetrain.

Haha, no not quite. What it is, is there's the back (like a reg. pick up truck) and u can take out the backwindow, clip it onto something on the seat, then the whole back can fold down (with the seats included) and then there's the plastic lining that's in there too so nothing gets hurt.
And to someone else's post...you can fit a quad on back with the tailgate up, with the seats folded down and the tailgate up, u have an 8 foot clearance. With the tailgate down, 10 foot. Pretty big:eek2:

Yeah, but I dont believe it is wide enough from what I have seen. It could fit a blaster size quad, but not a full on sport quad, more or less anything widened. One of the pictures in the brochure has a mojave or some crap in it, and it barely looks like it fits.

i like the plastic, i think its cool lookin

but, i would be embarresed to be seen drivin around in an Avi or escalade with any rim size bigger than 17's on it

Yea, that's true, the guy she bought it from has a quad (I didn't ask what type, cuz I didn't talk much the whole time) but I pre-assume it's a utility because he hunts. But he was sayin it fit, but it hit the edges on something and he had to duct tape something so it wouldn't rip off or something cuz it was too wide, I dunno.

my buddy is a mechanic at a chevy dealership down the street, he said that the gasket around the back of the cab rips easily, isnt covered under warranty and is almost a grand to replace.

i love those things personally i want one wicked bad. my mom had a trail blazer, and my dad's boss has the AV, he said the insides were identicle to my moms old 02' Trail Blazer LTZ. the blazer had some problems with it, some computer chip went, the defoggers on the mirrors went, the 4x4 went out. and all this happend after the factory warrenty went out, but we had the extended one. and on top of all this there was 2-3 recalls on it. NOT the most reliable thing weve ever had. We finnally got rid of it for a Acura TL. That blazer didnt hold its value for beans. we paid around 38gs for the blazer i believe, it was in perfect condition with just over 55k miles on it and we only got a trade in value of 13gs. best trade in we found.but back to the topic, if there identicle in any other way than interior, watch out.

blondie69
04-04-2004, 09:28 AM
The guy we bought it from had bought extended warrenty on it, it's up in September 05. So hopefully if anything happens, it happens in the next year and a half!! Even if anything does happen...I'm sure it's cheeper then gettin a new set of shocks, breaks, and a strut or two replaced ever year (mom's old car).
But this thing has some nice shocks on it! It'd have to for a 4x4. The roads around here are really really bad (well they are pretty much in N.S) but in Mom's car, all your doin is bouncing, in the truck now you jus feel like your floating:p It's super smooth

Haha yea then get a huge arse system inside, and get some hydrolics in it to make it bounce in the front like a low rider:p  .....remember....this is my moms vechile...I can't picture her crusin down the road w/ all this stuff on it...already wherever she goes around here there's like ppls (mostly men) checkin the truck over, cuz their not very common around here, like u never see em...I don't think she wants to stand out any more then she already does haha. :p

the spinners on the wheels will distract their attention form your mom driving, my friend has them and one time some kids were driving by and looking at them and they ended up hitting a pole because they were distracted,
