Well, I just got my 400EX, and I want to go get it checked up at the local shop. He said he's going to change all oil/bad gaskets/ and bad seals, he also said hes going to do the valves. He said its $200 for all that, so it's pretty much a topend rebuild. Do you guys think thats a good deal? It's also gonna be like another $130 to fix my back breaks, it needs a new rotor (80), new seals (25), and new pads (30). He said it would be like $350 for all this breaks and service and the topend rebuild and valving and stuff. That price sound fair?

Is it leaking oil, has it been totally dogged to pieces, is the rotor warped?

What bad seals/gaskets exactly?

Sounds like the average dealer flim flam screw you.

Oil change

Adjust valves (if they even do it, thats your topend rebuild)

Brake pads (unless fluids coming out the seals fine)
http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42383&highlight=changing+brakes

Oil-$5
Filter-$3
Pads-$18
Rotor-$50
Adjust valves-Free

$350 - $76 = $274 = New Exhaust

Regular maintinance is very easy on a 400.
Even if you really do need a new rotor, just look at it----easy.

The tech articles on this site or better yet a service manual will walk you through everything you need to do/check/maintain at a fraction of a fraction of that price.

Either its beat or he's tring to rip you off why would it need a valve job if it runs good? does it? is there any oil leaks? why does it need a rotor? what seals the caliper piston seals? I also think its a dealer shimmy sham

you can do all that stuff on your own with a manual...dealer is trying to take your money

Thanks guys, well I was dumb and rode around with rear pads on, and that scratched up the rotor pretty bad. The seal that blew is the caliper piston seal, so all the brake fluid drained out. The back pads are also bad. Where can I find a nice cheap rotor? As for the motor service, I've done two stroke bikes, never touched a four stroke, but I'm pretty good with mechanical things. So there is no reason to bring it to the shop? If one of you guys could find the time, please IM me at TeamECCRM125
thanks for all your help guys!

Also, the quad runs VERY strong! So I guess the valves don't need adjustment.
thanks

no, you should atleast check your valves every so often..the quad can still run fine and the valves can be out of wack..not by much.

I would also ask about those gaskets... he could be talking about the o-rings and metal crush gasket that is used during oil changes... then making it sound like MAJOR seals and gaskets and chargin you out the rear.

best advice, get yourself some tools and a service manual... understand how the machine works.

I got the 400EX used. Only problem was the back brakes didnt work. The owner said that the pads were bad, and the piston seal blew so it will need to be replaced.

i'm taking mine to the dealership for my first valve adjustment, its just something about opening the engine for the first time.. first quad.. first time opening the engine.. i guess im fine with the satisfaction of paying someone 65$ an hour.. but its right

Adjusting the valves is about the easiest thing to do on a 400.

ok, well I've decided I'm not going to take it to the shop. But, can you guys help me get links to good cheap rear brake rotors? The caliper piston seal, brake pads? Also the hydrolic fluid?
thanks

Not taking it to the shop --- Good for you!

I would try the site sponsor and see what kind of price you can get from them. Otherwise, www.rockymountainatv.com is a good place to look too.

Does titax make good rotors? They are only 50 bux on rockymountain! What other rotors are good for around that price range? Also what kind of brake pads should I get? I'm usualy riding around my house, ocasionaly they might see a tad of mud, but very rarely. mainly just MX, and around my house. What would be a good brake pad for a good price?
thanks

If you check out the Feb. 2004 edition of dirtwheels mag, there is a very good article on Galfer Brake Systems. The article says that the rotors are amazing. You can contact them at (805)653-5012

Galfer brakes a really expensive!!!! I don't think I'm ready to spend that much for some rear brakes, when they are all soo similar.
