I have the sparks 416 12.5:1 comp. cost me $198.00 the bore job cost $50.00 since I went to 80 over. Also got my FCR from Sparks for $450.00. Pro Fab Atv did my valves and porting, I think around $325.00. I have a web cam which cost me $130.00, I think the XR cam is about $120.00. I also have the WB ProMeg. Put in a better clutch, I used a Barnett.
Will this setup wake up your 400? YES

What parts are you looking for in a 'kit'?

Personally I'd just buy the piston (JE or wiseco whichever you prefer), grab some gaskets from service Honda, and have a local reputable machine shop do the cylinder boring.

I would definately go with Sparks.

I would like to get a kit that is around 1 grand.I am also trying to run only high test pump gas,say 93 octane only.:macho Will this motor have low end still? Will it sux in gas quciker cause of the larger carb?

I have a budy that has a 416 that has more low end than you will ever need. JE 10:1 piston, Carlson MX cam, Head porting, LRD MX pipe, Timing advance key, and the flywheel lightened. This bike will run with the 440's in a 200 foot drag and win. Very strong for a 416.

You can more than likely keep the price under a grand! I think I read in Dirt Wheels(in an ad) that someone is selling Quiksilver Carbs for 380! You can save 100 there. And the Quiksilver is a very nice carb too. If you can put most of the parts in on your own, you will save money there too. I would have a local shop do the porting/ boring. I would then order the sleeve, piston, cam, etc. from Sparks or whomever you choose.

I would get the 416 National kit from Sparks. This kit is said to beat many other companies 440 kits. The Sparks exhaust won the shootout in ATV Sport and that was only the X-4. The X-6 is made for highly modded motors like a Sparks 416 kit, Sparks 440 kit, Sparks 465 kit or even his 505 kit. The 505 isn`t on his site any more but, I would go with Sparks no doubt. If your for the cheaper price check out his 416 GNCC kit that was made for a guy that did not want to spend a lot. I know the kit is more than you want to spend but he also has some things on it for increased reliability. If you have extra money I would get them. No matter if you get the 416 GNCC kit or National kit you will be happy with Sparks. Hope I helped.

let me do your engine work..i can bore port and do every other thing the over priced shops do ....the reason i do it so cheap is because i didnt waste money on boring bars and stuff like that alls i use is a large drill bit and a rotary tool:)

on a 416 kit, any brand, do you have to get like your valves hard faced and new retainers and crank trued and that good stuff? or is it not like a 440? can you just get the piston and gaskets and go to the shop and bored it and run it? will it weaken the motor? what abot a cam? do you need it?

07-30-2001, 10:42 AM
If you ask me a cam and High comp piston go hand in hand,,,I don't know why anyone would want to go with a higher bore and leave the stock cam,,,but I guess it's not necessary..

will it hurt the cam or anything else if i put the 416 kit in, just the piston?

i would go with the sparks kit too.

07-30-2001, 11:21 AM
I don't think it would hurt,,,but I'd call a motor specialist and ask them first....

The 416 is a .080 bore over stock. What this means is that metal is removed from the cylinder to allow for a slightly larger piston. If you put a low compression piston in you will virtually have the same reliability as stock. Higher compression piston and you risk reliability. My opinion for you is to buy a new cam, such as the xr400 cam and get an 11:1 stock bore piston. You will see a big improvement over stock. Even putting a larger carb on will give you a boost without doing anything inside the motor. I will have to agree that if you go to the trouble of going into the motor, go ahead and do everything you can. These motors are not made to be continuously taken apart.

so put an XR cam in it, 11:1 stock bore piston and a carb. with 11:1 comp, dont i need race fuel? i dont want to run that ****, too expensive and i dont race.

No you don't need race fuel for 11:1. Performance will increase with race fuel, but is not necessary. 92 or 93 octane will do you fine. I have 12.5:1 and run regular gas from time to time and really have never known the difference other than the smell.

oh, i thought you needed race gas in every quad if the comp was 11:1 or higher. thanks.

You should use race gas or you will have detonation

if i were to get a JE 12:1 what would the actual compresion be in the engine. would it to much stress on the engine?

if you run the 11:1 and don't want to buy race gas, you can buy a colder spark plug, which will fix the detonation problem. You should be able to get the plugs at the dealer or probably at Auto Zone or somewhere like that

well the only choise for the standard bore is 10.5:1 and 12:1 i don't want to quite go as low as 10.5:1. will the cooler spark plug work with the 12:1 piston. i would like to have a 12:1 piston that would be awsome.

Sparks Racing can get a custom Compression piston so if you wanted 12:1 they could get it or something like a 11.8:1 maybe. Heck I would run race gas anyways it`s suppose to make it run cooler.
