Andrew McWilliams's Honda TRX90 ATV - Quad of the Month

Quad of the Month - July 2011

Andrew McWilliams's Honda TRX90 ATV

This is Andrew's customized '07 TRX 90EX. Andrew was born in 2004 with a condition called 'Ulna Dysplasia'. Long story short, he was born without elbows, 1 finger on his right hand, and two fingers on his left hand. Andrew had a strong desire to ride so I submitted a thread (here on atvriders.com) as a brainstorming session on how we could make Andrew's newly acquired quad (it was his brothers old quad) fitted so that he could ride it. Dave Carter from DC Motorsports stepped up and offered to do whatever it took to get the quad modified so Andrew could ride it. Dave re-designed the entire throttle assembly so that it could be operated by Andrews left foot. He also modified the nerf bars, foot pegs and brake assembly so that it could all be controlled by Andrews feet.

Once the throttle and brakes were complete, Kenny Vaughn from K-Fab Designs made a custom set of handlebars so Andrew could control the quad easier. The bars sit back 4", lowered 1" and are 2" narrower than the stock setup. He was now able to accelerate, stop and steer the quad on his own after the modifications. Marc from Fox suspension caught word of Andrew's build and wanted to help as well. Marc sent a full set of Fox Shox air shocks for the quad which added about 2" more travel over the stock suspension.

I can't thank these people enough as well as all of the other atvriders.com members who offered their help and ideas as well as the thanking the website itself, because without atvriders.com, none of this would have been possible. THANK YOU to EVERYONE! And thank you for the votes!

Customized for our son by Dave Carter (DC Motorsports) and Kenny Vaughn (K-Fab Designs) to be foot controlled. Throttle is controlled by the left foot. When he’s taller and learns to shift, the raised foot pegs will be removed so that he can control the gas and shift (his foot/boot will fit between the throttle and shifter peg). The bars were custom made to sit 4” closer, 2” lower and 2” narrower for easier steering. The brake is controlled by the right foot (obviously)…and the raised brake peg will be removed once he gets a little taller. The air shox were donated to him from Fox Shox after Dave Carter discussed the ‘build’ with them.

Without these modifications, our son would not be able to ride as he was born without elbows and only 2 fingers on his left hand and one finger on his right hand. Now, not only is he riding, but he has started racing!

(The raised pegs were welded on last minute by Dave when we realized Andrew was still a bit too short to reach the pegs after everything was put together at Dave’s shop in Arkansas around 2 years ago)
