2009 Yamaha Rhino 700 FI Safety Test Ride Review
Yamaha Rallies Behind The Rhino 700 FI Sport Edition

Test Ride - Yamaha Rhino 700 SI Sport Edition
Yamaha Rhino 700 FI Creek
The Yamaha Rhino 700 FI was tested through numerous different terrains, one of them being a creek crossing
Our test ride consisted of a 70-plus mile ride through the San Bernardino National Forest (SBNF) in Southern California and some neighboring Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land. The terrain consisted of wide, OHV-approved forest roads (both flat and curvy), narrow trails, creeks, rock-strewn runs, rutted and off-camber hills and a couple rock crawl sections. The forest and trails presented an ideal environment for the Rhinos.

The test was not a direct comparison between the old 700 FI and the newly updated (CPSC repair spec) Rhino. Instead, the test let us spend valuable seat time with Yamaha, to better understand the repair program and learn the safe and proper way to operate the Rhino. The ride was to reconfirm that the Rhino remains true to its original design and maintains its versatility and proven off-road capabilities, even with the slight engineering changes.

ATV Riding Proper Gear
Yamaha's website gives users tips on proper riding gear
The definition of “safe, responsible use” may vary with the individual owner, but Yamaha’s new Web site helps the end user comprehend what it means to dress and drive safely. Wearing full riding gear (see sidebar) at all times is an example of responsible operation. Having spotters for rock crawling is another example. Yamaha went a step further for us and let a product testing representative ride along as we navigated the rocks. He coached us on the proper driving technique, throttle input, the machine’s abilities and what to expect during the climb as other Yamaha staffers acted as spotters. Having a knowledgeable sidekick to shout out “put it in low range and diff. lock” is always a bonus.

Driving a Rhino in this type of terrain really comes down to the end user, experience, their comfort levels and capabilities. Regardless of the terrain type, driving a side-by-side should be done in a safe, responsible manner.
