To compliment the new looks and plush ride
of the Polaris Sportsman XP’s, Polaris
designed all new more powerful engines. The
Sportsman 850 XP has a twin cylinder EFI engine
that produces 70HP while the 550 XP produces
40 HP. To keep the vibration to a minimum these
engines have internal counter balancers and
are also rubber mounted to the chassis. These
engines are brought to life with the largest
starter motors in the industry, which require
less power to operate and provide reliable starting
to -35 degrees. Power is fed from the engine
through a roller driven clutch similar to the
ones used in high-powered snowmobiles. This
clutch has less friction and provides smoother
power delivery with faster back shifts. The
increase in HP and torque allow for a higher
low range gear, which results in a more usable
39 mph low gear top speed.

The 2wd
& 4wd switch is conveniently located
on the handlebars quick and easy engagement

The Sportsman XP features a 20%
larger radiator, which is easily accessible
under the front rack |
Polaris increased the cooling capacity of the
Sportsman’s by 20% to handle the extra
towing and HP capabilities of these machines.
The radiators where relocated 4” high
in the chassis to avoid obstruction. The radiator
has been made easily accessible for quick cleaning
and maintenance. The Sportsman’s are equipped
with Polaris’s exclusive On Demand, All-Wheel
Drive (AWD) and Engine Braking System (EBS)
with Active Decent Control (ADC). The intelligent
AWD system automatically engages when it senses
the ATV needs more forward traction and disengages
automatically when that traction is no longer
needed. When descending a steep grade the ADC
provides four wheel braking and exceptional
low speed control when the AWD is on and there
is no throttle input below 15 MPH. The towing
capacity is now 1500 lbs and the rack capacity
has increased to 240lbs rear and 120lbs front.
The functionality of the Sportsman’s durable
composite racks is further enhanced by the 100
built in tie down points. Polaris has equipped
the Sportsman’s with automotive style
brakes all the way around to bring all that
power and towing capacity to a halt. The Sportsman
850 XP has four wheel disc brakes while the
550 XP has three wheels disc.
