Shamokin, PA (6/30/2011) - Being
sent to a manufactures press event is always fun,
of course it is also work, and those of us in
the media look towards those handling things to
make it as much pleasure and little actual work
as possible. Hey, it isn't a secret, I just like
to tell it like it is! Its dreadfully painful
to have to be handed the latest model of ATV or
SxS and asked to go flog it for a few days all
the while being looked after and never really
wanting for a thing. There is always knowledgeable
staff on hand, good food, drink and usually a
nice comfy hotel to bed down in after a hard days
work. Trust me, it is not a job for the weak or
feeble.
So when I got the email asking if I wanted
to hit the Kawasaki media event for the 2012
at a top secret location only two hours from
home, I summoned the courage to say yes. In
fact, I do not recall even asking what models
we would be thrashing (excuse me, test riding
and reviewing) and was way more interested in
this new location so close to home! I knew the
folks at Kawasaki would take good care of us
and had to really contain myself from making
a few calls to see exactly what the scoop was
on this new secret riding location.

in the works, "Anthracite Outdoor
Adventure Area" |
When I finally punched in the address for the
hotel into my GPS, I knew we were heading smack
dab into the middle of ATV racing country near
Shamokin, PA! That small region nestled in amongst
the coal hills and mountains has produced some
of the worlds fastest and best ATV racers in
the world and they all grew up riding some of
the same dirt we would get a chance to call
top secret.

For
those not familiar with coal, the park
name "Anthracite Outdoor Adventure
Area" comes from its coal mining
history in Pennsylvania. Anthracite coal
was first mined in PA back in 1775, and
the riding park is spread across previously
mined areas for Anthracite, and there
is still traces of the coal and equipment
used to mine it located on the property.
Anthracite is one of the more expensive
coal products as it is very dense and
has a high carbon count, which makes it
a great power soure |
Arriving at the location of what hopefully
will end up being the "Anthracite Outdoor
Adventure Area", we got our first glimpse
at a diamond in the rough. Kathy Jeremiah, the
project coordinator, quickly pointed out the
groups plans to bring this area a managed and
maintained 6000 acres of land dedicated to the
off road enthusiast. It was quickly apparent
those giving us the low down were not just empty
suits who had the pleasure of doling out info
to people, these guys were the real deal and
the ones neck deep in making this project run.
