400EX on a MX & XC Track
Cody Hill put the Project 400EX to the test on a MX & XC Track
Finally completed, the 400EX was sent on it's maiden voyage and our test rider was more then pleased with the outcome. The suspension was working better then we expected as the quad was put through its paces. Jump size was increased as our rider became more comfortable with the newly rebuilt machine. Soaking up landings and taking corners like it was glued to the track was exactly what we wanted, and that is what we got! Our test rider cleared a 70 foot uphill triple and the shocks soaked it up and were ready for more. While we know these shocks have their limits compared to aftermarket suspension, we feel for the beginner or casual motocross rider, they will work quite well at a fraction of the cost, and may even be on par with some aftermarket shocks on the market!

The smooth power of the 400EX is controllable enough for any level of rider and makes the quad a joy to ride. With the addition of reverse, getting out of trouble is almost as fast as getting into it. The reverse control is located on the right fender and is employed by turning the knob and shifting down past first gear. A light on the handlebar's dash area lights to let you know you’re ready to go back from hence you came. On a personal note, I really did not let the reverse play a role in our decision to buy this model, however after using it I wouldn’t want an ATV with out it!

HMF Slip-on Exhaust system was installed and we removed the airbox lid and installed a "Dial-A-Jet" Kit for added Horsepower
Our project 400EX is far from a pro caliber ATV, but we set out to build a project that was within reach of the everyday rider, and the goal was accomplished with the 400EX especially since used 400EX ATVs are readily available at bargain prices, and they are extremely reliable if maintained. One may ask why a 400EX and not one of the new 450's? Well, sometimes bigger is not better! If the goal was flat out power or speed, the nod would have gone to one of the 450's, but most riders will opt for reliability and comfort over speed with the exception of those that are trying to race on a serious level.
