2008 BRP CanAm Outlander 500 Utility ATV GNCC Race Review

2008 BRP CanAm Outlander 500 Utility ATV GNCC Race Review

ERGONOMICS:
2008 CanAm Outlander 500 Utility ATV
Sitting on the Outlander just feels right, the bars and controls felt just right and exactly where I would have positioned them if I had installed them. The seat was soft, wide and very comfortable. The shift lever is easy to reach and well thought out, but it would be nice to have it on the opposite side of the throttle, and I did find it a little notchy when trying to go from high to reverse but this is a brand new quad and should go away once broke in. One thing that I did not like was that the sides of the rear rack would hit my hips when I leaned off the side for turns. This probably won't be an issue for the casual rider but I thought it worth mentioning.

The Can-Am Outlander seats are very plush for long trail rides and the rear rack provides plenty of storage, but they can get in the way when trying to lean off the side of the ATV for aggressive riding
The EFI on the CanAm Outlander Utility ATVs provide an easy to push thumb throttle for reduced fatigue on long rides. Also, the 4x4 switch is within thumbs reach for engagement
First let me say that I hate thumb throttles, normally I can't ride more than 30 minutes before my thumb cramps up and becomes useless. This was a big concern for me before the race as I would not have time to install a twist. The Can-Am's throttle has a very light push and is positioned perfectly. Not once during the 2 hour race did my thumb cramp up. Actually I never once remembered that I was using a thumb throttle which means that it wasn't bothering me at all. The grips were a bithard for my tastes and did give me a couple blisters.

POWER:

Rotex 500cc V-Twin liqud-cooled, 8 Valve SOHC Engine
Even tho 500cc is considered small in the utility market, this ATV is very powerful! In the field sections, I could stay right with any of the sport 450 quads. The only other quads that would pull away was the big bore utilities and U2 class quads. Throttle response was almost instantaneous. I could easily hit the throttle and bring the front end up to clear ditches and other trail obstacles, and I just absolutely love the sound of the v-twin engine when you snap the throttle and bring it to life.
