Racers
started their long journey in the streets
of Ensenada, Mexico. (Pictured Left) Wayne
Matlock started for Matlock Racing aboard
their Honda TRX700XX ATV. (Pictured Right)
Jorie Williams started for 100a Quad75ATV
Race Team |
As the ATV left the starting line, Matlock Racing’s
1a team (Wayne Matlock, Wes Miller, Josh Caster)
would run into a setup change issue that seemed
to be a setback at the time. Matlock just pressed
forward and eventually the terrain would come
to the Honda 700XX instead of the opposite. Jorie
Williams had started for the 100A team and with
the rider change at Ojo’s Kenny Sanford
kept the pace for the next section.

racers meet before the start of the 600+
mile race through the desert

Andy
Lagzdins of Christy Racing waits for the
race to start. Christy Racing would take
fourth in the Pro ATV Class 25
|
Andy Lagzdins took the start for 6A team of Craig
Christy, but he would break an axle within the
first 20 miles of the race, which lost the team
nearly an hour right off the start, but it didn’t
send them packing as they charged on as the BAJA
1000 isn’t for those that aren’t prepared
to deal with catastrophic issues along the 600+
mile long race.

The
Matlock Racing ATV Race team makes there
way to the next check point & pit stop |
After the first hundred miles of the SCORE BAJA
1000, ATV race teams begin to spread out with
the top teams pulling away. The battle between
the 1A and 100A would rage on through the day
and eventually into the night even though these
two Honda quads were not in the same class the
race was more for the overall position with bragging
rights. The Quad75 S+S Motorsports Honda 450r
engine roared through the sand and rocks right
on the heels of that Honda 700XX of Wayne Matlock’s
1A.

The
Quad75 ATV Race team's Jamie Kirkpatrick
experienced a wreck on the way to RM 339.
After a quick pit stop & tweaking to
the handlebars they were back on track with
no injuries & no mechanical errors |
Jamie Kirkpatrick would get tossed off the 100A
machine and thankfully he was not injured. This
set the Brandon Brown team back just a bit as
they had to work on the light rack and bar controls
at Race Mile 329. Wes Miller of Matlocks 1A team
would have to stop to clean out silt from the
air box, which gave the 100a a chance to gain
valuable ground back. Off across Valley Trinidad
and over to San Vincente both teams ran without
any setbacks. Richie Brown climbed aboard the
100A quad at San Vincente and rode for the first
time of the race all the way back up to Ojo’s
Negros. Richie’s sections was easily over
one hundred miles through some of the roughest
terrain with a miles of huge exposed rocks and
brutally rough terrain after the heavy rain the
week before the race.
