Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson swept both motos
under the cover of darkness at round number seven
of the 2011 Yamaha Quad X Series and wrapped up
the pro championship a round early while MCR/Maxxis
Tire’s Beau Baron and David Haagsma claimed
second and third on the pro podium at the end
of the evening.
The second night race of the season saw typical
warm temperatures and clear skies in the Arizona
desert. Track conditions were good despite a little
bit of dust in the early motos and the layout
was fast, which was ideal for Dustin Nelson as
he lined up for the first moto.
Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson has been the points
leader for the entire series, but being a veteran
racer, he knew that anything can happen out there
and he could still lose to Beau Baron of he was
not careful. “I knew going into the last
couple of rounds that I still needed to finish
ahead of Beau in order to keep a nice lead over
him in points and I had to finish in front of
him this round to wrap up the championship, so
I was feeling a little pressure out there,”
Nelson explained.

Yamaha's
#94 Dustin Nelson grabbed the Moto One Holeshot
& lead the entire Moto with Maxxis'
#549 Beau Baron in chase |
Nelson always appears calm, cool and collected
when gets to the starting line, no matter how
much pressure he is under, and this time was no
exception as he headed to the starting line. “I
was actually a little off on my start, but everyone
else got bunched up in the inside of the first
turn and I took the outside line and got around
everyone,” said Nelson, who grabbed the
holeshot and the lead. Beau Baron was the only
challenger for Nelson and he stayed close behind
the number 94 Yamaha for the first half of the
moto, but dropped back, leaving Nelson to cruise
to the moto one win.
“I was making a few mistakes out there
in the first moto, so I was a little relieved
when I saw Beau drop back. That let me relax a
little and just ride my own race. I kept distancing
myself from the rest of the pack and had a seven
second lead at the checkered flag,” said
Nelson.

Yamaha's #94 Dustin Nelson once again grabbed
the Holeshot in Moto 2, which also included
a $250 Holeshot bonus from GYTR & Yamalube |
Despite being a little nervous in the second
moto, Nelson shot off the line and grabbed the
holeshot once again. “I felt really good
out there for the second moto. In fact, I think
that was one of my best races this season,”
he said. Nelson rode a flawless race from start
to finish, increasing his lead with every lap
and taking the checkered flag by over seven seconds
ahead of second place. Nelson’s win not
only gave him the overall pro win for the day,
but also earned him the 2011 Yamaha Quad X Pro
Championship.
“I’ve really had a great season and
it is a huge relief to be able to wrap up the
championship a round early.

Yamaha's #94 Dustin Nelson wrapped up the
Quad X Pro ATV Championship with an impressive
13th Moto win of the year |
“I have to thank Yamaha and all of my sponsors
for everything they have done, and all of their
support this season. I am happy to give them another
championship. I have to thank my dad, John Nelson,
who is also my mechanic, for keeping the quads
running awesome all season and I have to thank
Bill Nelson for all of his help and support as
well,” said Nelson, who has no intensions
of taking it easy, even though he has won the
championship.
“When I go out there, I race to win, and
the last round will be no exception. I have won
the overall in every round so far and I want to
be able to keep that momentum going,” Nelson
concluded.
