Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson topped the pro podium
at round number four of the 2011 Quad X series
and was joined by two new faces on the podium
in the way of MCR/Maxxis Tire’s David Haagsma
in second and Yamaha’s Josh Row in third.
With temps soaring to the 104 degree mark it
is no wonder that Speed World rounds are held
at night as to avoid some of the scorching southwest
desert heat. Temps cooled off to about 85 degrees
as the Pro class took to the line for the first
moto. The track conditions for the first moto
were quite dusty, so a good start was crucial
and that was Dustin Nelson’s strategy as
well.
As the gate dropped, Nelson charged off the line,
taking the moto one holeshot and the lead. As
the battles brewed behind him, Nelson pulled away
into a comfortable five second lead. Nelson, who
remained unchallenged the entire time, ran away
with the moto one win. “I had a good start
and I know that the dust was an issue for a lot
of guys so that kind of gave me an advantage for
the first moto, but moto two was a totally different
story,” stated Nelson.

straight overall win as he extends his points

Just before the second pro moto, the track was
given an ample watering, which got rid of the
dust, but the water seemed to be too much of a
good thing and caused the track to become a slick,
muddy mess. “I was second off the line behind
David Haagsma and I lost most of my tear offs
early in the race so I wasn’t able to see
well and it took me a while to get by David,”
stated Dustin Nelson.
Nelson was finally able to get by Haagsma at
about the mid-way point of the race, but he wasn’t
able to pull away like he did in the first moto.
“David stayed right with me for most of
it and he didn’t fall back until the last
couple of laps,” said Nelson, who took the
moto two win and the overall.

Yamaha's #3 Josh Row secures his best Yamaha
/ Quad-X Racing finish of the season with
a 2nd Overall |
Yamaha’s Josh Row has been getting faster
and faster at each Quad X round and round four
was no exception. Row was in second off the start
behind his teammate Dustin Nelson, but Row was
being followed closely by Beau Baron, who had
every intention of taking over second. Row stayed
the course and held off Baron for most of the
race, until the final laps when Baron got by,
but Baron encountered engine trouble and dropped
back allowing Row to reclaim the number two spot
before reaching the checkered flag.
Moto two was another strong performance for Row
as he was in third off the start and was looking
very consistent despite the muddy conditions.
Row charged hard and held off another attack from
Beau Baron to claim third in the second moto,
giving him his best Quad X finish to date in second
on the pro podium.
