Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson took his third straight
win of the season at round three of the Yamaha Quad
X series and was joined on the podium by MCR/Maxxis
Tire’s Beau Baron and South African racer
Dirkie Baard.
Cahuilla Creek was the hosting facility, where
unseasonably cool temps and overcast skies helped
keep dust to a minimum and give racers a break
from the heat that is typical for this time of
year. Track conditions were good and racers were
happy with the layout that featured many different
choices for lines that helped to keep things close
between Dustin Nelson and Beau Baron.
In the first moto, Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson
was side by side with Beau Baron off the start
for the first couple of turns, but then Baron
was able to get in front of the number 94 racer.
“I was behind Beau and I was able to check
out some other lines and try them without him
being able to see what I was doing and use those
same lines, since he was in front of me,”
said Nelson. In the third lap, Nelson utilized
those other lines and was able to get in front
of Baron, right before the whoops.

Although Nelson took the lead and the moto one
win, Baron was never far off the pace, making
Nelson a bit nervous. “Beau has been close
all year and winning has not been easy. He has
enough speed to make me worry,” said Nelson.
In moto two, Nelson had his work cut out for
him as he was in third off the line and had to
battle with his teammate Josh Row briefly before
making his way into second so he could chase down
Baron, who grabbed the holeshot. “Beau made
a mistake in the first lap that allowed me to
catch up to him. We were side by side going into
the whoops and I was able to get under him just
after that and take over the lead,” Nelson
explained. Nelson began to pull away a little
bit, but in three laps from the finish, Nelson
made a mistake and Baron was once again on him
grab bar.
It was a close race, but Nelson was able to
hang on to the lead and take the moto two win
for the overall. “It was a good race and
I’m glad to take the win. Beau is a tough
competitor so that always keeps things interesting
out there,” Nelson stated.

MCR/Maxxis Tire’s Beau baron has increased
his intensity on the track this season and has
given a Dustin Nelson a challenge and round three
was no exception as Baron grabbed both moto holeshots,
which is not an easy task when going up against
Nelson. Baron led for a short time in moto one
but fell back to second, where he stayed close
to Nelson and finished in a solid second place.
In the second moto, Baron led for three laps before
Nelson was able to get by, but Baron was never
far behind and challenged Nelson late in the moto,
but was unable to make a move before reaching
the checkered flag. Baron’s 2-2 finishes
put him in second place overall.
“I’ve been trying really hard for
a win. Dustin is a tough competitor out there
but I am determined to get a win this season.
I’ve been training and my speed is right
there, so I think I can do it,” stated Baron
