#94 Dustin Nelson held the lead to the checkered
flag to claim the Moto One Win |
Hot and dry conditions were on tap at Arizona
Cycle Park and despite the dust, it seemed to
suit Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson well as he charged
off the start in the first moto, grabbing the
holeshot with Evan Thatcher and Beau Baron in
hot pursuit. Nelson was on a mission to keep his
number one competitor, Beau Baron, at bay and
it was mission accomplished for the number 94
Yamaha as he began to pull a five second lead.
Baron was able to make his way around Thatcher
and close in on Nelson, but even though Baron
stayed close, Nelson was able to hold him off
and take the moto one win.
“I had a good lead, but I got a little
bit of arm pump toward the end of the moto and
Beau caught up. I knew as long as I didn’t
make any mistakes that I could keep the lead so
I just stayed focused and made it happen,”
said Nelson.

Moto 2 Holeshot Award along with $500 for
the overall win |
Moto two was a little tougher for Nelson as he
and Baron were tire to tire in the holeshot, but
Nelson was able to edge out Baron to take the
lead. Nelson was able to pull away a little bit
early in the moto, but Baron again caught up,
but was unable to get close enough to make a move
for the lead, giving Nelson his second moto win
of the day and the top spot on the podium.
“I was really stoked to have good enough
power to take the holeshots and get ahead because
the track was pretty narrow and rough and it was
hard to pass, so I was glad to get out front right
away and take the win,” Nelson, said.
MCR/Maxxis Tire’s Beau Baron came on strong
for round two and he was in third off the start
in moto one behind Evan Thatcher and Dustin Nelson.
Baron charged hard and made his way around Thatcher
and began to chase down Nelson, who had put a
five second gap between him and the rest of the
pack.

Maxxis' Beau Baron once again goes 2-2 for
second overall |
“It was really dusty out there so I just
waited a little bit for Evan to get tired, and
then I got by him and started to catch up to Dustin,”
said Baron. Baron charged hard and was able to
close in, but was unable to make a pass before
reaching the checkered flag, giving Baron a second
place finish.
In moto two, Baron and Nelson were side by side
as they charged into the first corner. Baron moved
in behind Nelson on the narrow track and dropped
back a bit due to all of the dust. “Visibility
was really bad for the first part of the second
moto and I could hardly see anything and I had
to back off a bit,” said Baron who was able
to close back in in the final laps. Baron charged
hard, but he was unable to make a move on Nelson.
Baron’s solid 2-2 finishes would put him
in second overall for the day.
“I’m kind of frustrated because I
really want to beat him (Dustin). I was pretty
wound up and pushed too hard and I made a couple
mistakes, but I still got second so I am happy
with that,” said Baron.
