Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson went 1-1, taking
the first 2011 Yamaha Quad-X Racing Series win
of the season, while MCR/Maxxis Tire’s Beau
Baron finished in a close second, with Ethan Thatcher
joining them on the podium.
The season opener was plagued with bad weather
and Glen Helen looked more like a swimming hole
than a motocross track with all the giant puddles
that developed due to heavy rains that fell in
the area. Track workers did their best to clear
off the standing water and mud, but even their
best efforts didn’t help much. Despite the
inclement conditions, there was a good turnout
for all classes and everything went well, especially
for Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson.

Unusually
heavy rain turn Glen Helen into a mud hole
for the opening round, but despite the muddy
conditions, the Quad-X season opener had
a fair amount of entries with 16 Pros signed,
which topped all of 2010 |
There were 16 pro’s on the starting line
for the first moto, but Dustin Nelson was ready
and grabbed the holeshot. As soon as he was out
front, Nelson began to pull away and by the fourth
lap, he had an eight second gap on the rest of
the pack.

#94 Dustin Nelson charges through the mud
to claim the Moto One Win |
“For the first moto, it was pretty rough
out there. There was a lot of standing water and
it was mostly a single line track. If you went
outside of that line, it was really muddy and
a lot of people were spinning out and getting
stuck,” explained Nelson, who took his lead
all the way to the checkered flag to claim the
first moto win.
In moto two, it wasn’t quite as easy for
Nelson as MCR/Maxxis Tire’s Beau Baron grabbed
the holeshot and was leading. Nelson pressured
Baron and in lap two, Nelson was able to get by,
but Baron did not back down and gave Nelson a
fight all the way to the final lap. Despite the
pressure, Nelson held on for the moto two win
and the overall.

“It was really tough to pass out there,
so I just kept pressuring Beau, but he was right
there for the whole moto and showed me a tire
a few times,” said Nelson.
