NQRA Virginia
Motor Mayhem Opening Round ATV Race Report
Chase City, Virginia - April 10,
2010
Chase City, VA (4/16/2010) - Its
official, NQRA IS BACK!!! And going against the
norm is only the beginning. With a new class structure,
an awesome facility, crowds of paying spectators,
timed races instead of set number of laps, rider
intros, a rider pit party to sign autographs for
the fans, a new payout structure, and it doesn't
take you long to see that NQRA is on its way to
changing the way our sport will be promoted in the
future.
The weekend started off like any normal race. With
a 2 hour delay to remove
the mud from all the rain. Practice got under way
with a roll in and then it started, more track time
than ever before, which would set the tone for the
entire weekend. An unlimited practice for 2 hours
and then a riders meeting to go over the weekends
format.
And up next, qualifying heats that count toward
your overall finishing order and
not just gate position. Timed races instead of number
of lap scoring for all classes, not just pros. Then
a short break and it's time to start the nights
main show. First order was getting the music, the
disco lights, strobe lights and the fog machines
cranked up with the DJ, getting the announcers ready
with the rider's info, the pro/am riders' quads
ready in staging with their crews, and the riders
back stage.
Then the music starts, the announcers welcome the
crowd and soon the rider introductions begin. One
by one the riders are introduced to the crowd and
they get to come out waving and some even breakout
into a unique dance, not sure what that was all
about, we all let that one go this time! And as
we get to the pro/am class the crews roll out the
quad for the rider as their name is called out and
then the rider jumps off the stage and joins their
crew and quad on the front stretch.
Now it's race time, and racing we did. The pro/am
class had some of the biggest superstars in our
sport today. Names like factory Can-Am's Chuckie
Creech, Factory KTM's Nick Camilli, Team Maxxis
Tire's Kirby Cooke, and Victory Motorsports' Brad
Riley just to name a few The heats were exciting
but they were nothing compared to what the crowd
was in store for later. These four gentlemen put
on a show that words can't even describe, passing,
banging tire to tire, lap after lap. You could throw
a blanket over these four and you'd think it would
only be for a lap or two, but with a main event
running for 20 minutes + a lap they ran for a total
of 26 laps and they came across the finish line
with fourth place less than a second behind winner
Creech.
Lap after lap Creech leads on his brand new Can
Am, hounded first by Cooke, but then Riley gets
around and he starts in on Creech. But lap after
lap Creech holds off all comers and all the while
Camilli is closing in on the front threesome, just
as Cooke is banging on Riley he suddenly gets a
bump from the KTM powered rocket. The announcers
are going crazy, the fans are going crazy, but these
riders are as cool as a fighter pilot in combat.
This was quiet possibly the best race of any kind
I've ever witnessed.
Want to see it? Go to www.youtube.com
and type in Virginia Motor Mayhem pro/am race, it's
awesome!
The weekend also saw fierce racing in all amateur
classes for the ATVs, SidexSides and Pit Bikes.
The amateurs were rewarded with payouts of more
than $4000 in Gift Cards instead of cheap plaques
and trophies. Ask any rider there if they felt they
got their moneys worth, with more seat time, more
cash, more recognition, more fun! This may have
been one of the best ATV race weekends ever.
The next round of the Virginia Motor Mayhem is May
