Motoworks / Can-Am's Brandon Smith clains
his 2nd straight win at Glen helen |
In moto one of the Pro class, Can-Am/Motoworks’
Brandon Smith came off the line in 5th place,
but worked his way into second by the 4th turn
and began to chase down Justin Noss, who had taken
an early lead. Brandon soon caught up and made
the pass and once in the lead, Brandon began to
steadily increase his lead to take the first moto
win.
In moto two, Brandon took 4th in the holeshot and
worked his way through to catch up with Dustin Nelson
who was in the lead. Smith pressured Nelson and
the two began to battle for the lead. The pair were
pulling away from the rest of the pack while battling
for the lead. Nelson held off Smith successfully
until the last lap when Brandon went outside in
a corner and Smith slipped in underneath, but as
Smith came in, he and Nelson connected and Nelson
went tumbling. Smith went on to take the second
moto win and the Pro class overall.
Although Nelson went down, he had a good enough
lead to be able to hop back on his bike and still
cross the finish line in second. “I sort of
drifted out when Brandon went to pass me on the
outside and we clipped wheels, but I had enough
of a lead on Noss that I was able to still take
second,” said Nelson.
Josh Frederick was having a tough time of things
this round. Josh got tangled up in the 1st moto
which put him all the way to the back, but he
made a big charge and worked his way to 7th by
the end of the first moto. In moto two, Josh once
again ran into trouble when he was pushed off
the track in the first turn and crashed. Luckily
Josh was uninjured and threw down some of the
fastest lap times of the race to catch back up
to 9th place. Josh’s charge allowed him
to finish in 6th overall.

Yamaha's Dustin Nelson remains in control
of the points lead, but he will need to
stay on his game the final few rounds to
secure another championship |
Meanwhile, Justin Noss was on his game for round
six. The #30 Yamaha YFZ450 took the holeshot in
the first moto and lead for a good part of the
race before losing his lead to Brandon Smith,
but came in a close second at the end of the first
moto. In moto two, Noss was a little slower off
the line, but gave it all he had to take over
third place before crossing the finish line. Noss’s
2-3 finishes earned him the final spot on the
podium at the end of the day.
With only three races left in the 2008 season
the points battle has begun to intensify as there
is a close race for second in the Pro class between
Josh Frederick who has 138 points, Brandon Smith
with 133 and Justin Noss who has 129. Meanwhile,
Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson has a 24 point lead
over 2nd place Frederick, but with Frederick’s
consistency and Smith finishing strong with three
wins so far this season, there is still the possibility
that Nelson could lose his lead.
