Round number five of the ITP Quadcross series traveled
back to Glen Helen Raceway this past weekend where
Can-Am/Motoworks’ Brandon Smith and Josh Frederick
claimed the top two spots on the podium in the Pro
class while Polaris/Lone Star/Eichner Racing’s
Doug Eichner was victorious in the Open Pro class.
A new concrete launching pad had some racers
spinning off the gate with its smooth texture,
but that didn’t seem to matter to Can-Am’s
Brandon Smith as he took the holeshot in the heat
race, followed closely by teammate Josh Frederick,
Jason Fife and Jeremie Warnia, who made the trek
all the way from Boutigny, France.

Suzuki's French racer, Jeremie Warnia, was
applying the pressure to Motowork's Brandon
Smith & Josh Frderick |
Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson was lagging behind
a bit as he had a very hard landing early on that
injured his ankle and wrist. Josh Frederick began
applying the pressure to leader Brandon Smith
in lap two and made the pass for first, but his
lead would not last as Smith stayed right on his
heels and retook the lead in lap three. Justin
Noss, who had a mid pack start was working his
way up 3rd and was battling with Jason Fife when
things took a turn for the worse. “I was
battling with Jason and I blew a corner. It took
me a while to get back on track and by then I
was at the back of the pack,” said Noss.
Blowing the corner was not Noss’s only set
back for the day; the hard landing also took its
toll causing Noss to injure his wrist.

#70 Brandon Smith takes over the lead from
#603 Josh Frederick in the Pro Main with
Smith going on to claim his 2nd Win of the
season followed by Fredericks for a one,
two, sweep for Motoworks |
In the Pro main event, it was Can-Am’s
Josh Frederick who grabbed the holeshot, with
Brandon Smith right on his grab bar. Following
Brandon was Jason Fife, Jeremie Warnia, Mike Machado
and Dustin Nelson, who was still hurting from
his hard landing in the heat race. Frederick was
holding a strong lead for the first two laps despite
the pressure from Smith.
In the third lap, Smith made his move and took
over first place. Smith then proceeded to increase
the distance between him and the rest of the pack.
At the finish line, it was Brandon Smith taking
1st, followed by Josh Frederick in 2nd, and Jeremie
Warnia in 3rd. “My bike was running awesome
today. It felt really good to take another win,”
said Brandon who is now up to 4th place in the
points race.

Jason
Fife secured yet another top 5 finish, which
moved him up to 7th in the points race and
only 8 points out of the top five |
Yamaha's
Dustin Nelson rounded out the top 5, and
continues to lead the points race by 19
points over Can-Am's Josh Frederick |
Jason Fife ran a consistent race to take 4th
and Dustin Nelson, who is still the points leader,
rounded out the top five. “I needed to ride
to salvage points and I was really hurting so
I didn’t think I would do that well so I’m
pretty happy with 5th considering how everything
went,” said Nelson. Mike Machado was back
in action this weekend and ran a strong race finishing
in 6th followed by Jesse Goss, Dustin Terry, Justin
Noss and Derrick Sass rounding out the top ten.
