Yamaha's Dustin Nelson Claims his
third Win of the Season on his DRD Powered
Yamaha YFZ 450 |
The Saturday night action at Speedworld MX Park
was sizzling…literally. Temps soared to over
110 degrees, but the heat was no match for Yamaha’s
Dustin Nelson who claimed a 1-1 finish in the Pro
class, extending his series points lead despite
serious pressure from Can-Am/Motowork’s Brandon
Smith.
Round four of the ITP Quadcross was a night race,
which has become a tradition over the last couple
of years for the series. The night race offers
it’s own set of challenges, as racers have
to contend with not only the searing summer heat
of the Arizona desert, but also the different
lighting conditions that can cast shadows that
interfere with depth perception, which can be
a little nerve racking when flying through the
air. “When we do the night race, I practice
on Friday night and skip the daytime practice
on Saturday. I don’t want to get used to
the track when it’s light because there’s
a lot of differences in lighting and how you see
things and I want to be able to remember the track
as it is in the dark,” Dustin Nelson explained
in regards to his night racing strategy.

Round
4 of the Yamaha / ITP Quadcross series held
at SpeedWorld is raced under the lights
after dark, and for good reason with temps
soaring to 112 degrees during the day, and
Steve Beilman took advantage of the heat
to setup a mini beach paradise with a palm
trees, pool, and tent to protect him the

Nelson’s theory definitely paid off for
him as he grabbed the holeshot in moto one with
Brandon Smith right on his heals. The pair were
followed off the line by Can-Am/Motowork’s
Josh Frederick, Jason Fife, Chris Riley, and Justin
Noss. While Frederick, Fife, Riley and Noss were
busy battling it out, Nelson began to check out
with Smith right on his heels. Nelson led the
entire moto, but Smith was right there. “Brandon
was right behind me the whole moto waiting for
me to make a mistake, but that didn’t happen
and I held on to the lead all the way to the end,”
said Nelson. Smith crossed the finish line in
a close second, followed by Josh Frederick in
3rd, and Jason Fife in 4th, while Noss and Riley
dropped back to 7th and 8th.
