Kinston, NC - The season opener
of the 2012 Extreme Dirt Track Series saw Honda
East Toledo’s Harold Goodman take a double
win in both the Pro and Pro-am classes while Brad
Riley claimed three podium finishes with a win in
the Pro-am Unlimited class.
The Iron Clad Motorsports Park at Lenoir County
Fairgrounds played host for the first round of
the 2012 racing season. This is only the second
year the facility has been holding events, but
everything was well run and everyone seemed to
have a good time. “It’s a really good
facility. They have a lot of RV hook-ups and on
Friday night, they had a free dinner for all the
racers and their families; it was a really good
time,” said Harold Goodman.
Some improvements were made to the course since
last season, with a re-worked split lane that
was faster and the course was well groomed and
offered several off camber turns. The facility
is already talking about some changes next season
when they will try to coordinate the day for the
first round of the EDT series with their county
fair where they anticipate approximately 4,000
spectators.
The weather was overcast with temps about the
80 degree mark, which reduced the need to water
the track and kept things fairly dry. The races
did run a little late due to an injury and an
issue with the lights at first, but the pro class
went out at about 11:30pm and put on a good show.

There were twenty racers on the line for the
pro class, but Harold Goodman was able to get
the traction he needed with his new Hoosier tires
and grabbed the first Pro holeshot of the season.
“My new Hoosiers worked great. I grabbed
the holeshot in the Pro class and just pulled
away. I had a pretty good gap between me and the
rest of the pack when I crossed the finish line,”
said defending Pro champ, Goodman.
Brad Riley had a back of the pack start in the
Pro main but he was able to use the new split
lane to his advantage. “Everyone was taking
the inside lane, but I was passing everyone on
the outside,” said Riley, who charged his
way through traffic for a second place finish.

Dasa Racing/Walsh Racecraft backed Michael Coburn
was looking good as well as he claimed the final
spot on the Pro podium. Coburn made his way into
second and was looking strong as he was gaining
on Goodman, but in the final lap, things did not
go according to plan.
“I was gaining on Harold and my clutch
started to go out and Brad Riley was gaining on
me. In the last turn I was only able to go about
5 MPH and Brad got around me about five feet from
the finish line” said a disappointed Coburn.
