2011 ATV Extreme Dirt Track Pro & Pro-Am Race Report

Extreme Dirt Track ATV Racing
Round #8 - Links
Goldsboro, NC - Sparks Racing’s Michael Coburn topped the pro and pro-am podiums at the final round of the 2011 Extreme Dirt Track Series, but Houser Racing’s Harold Goodman reclaimed the Pro and Pro-am championships after returning to the series full time this season.

This was the first time for the series to head to Busco Beach and racers were treated to a brand new track that had been built just a couple months prior to the event. There were good lines and plenty of opportunities to pass, making for an exciting day of racing. There were approximately 4,500 people at the riding facility, enjoying Labor Day weekend, which added to a large spectator turnout, and the warm and sunny weather only added to the fun atmosphere for the weekend. “It was a great facility and a great track. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it and I hope we get to race there again next season,” said Harold Goodman.

PRO ATV MAIN RACE REPORT

Heading into the Pro main event, the points were still tight between Michael Coburn and points leader Harold Goodman. Goodman would only need to finish in the top five to take the championship, but going up against a competitor as fast and as tough as Michael Coburn, Goodman would have his work cut out for him; and the competition would be fierce as the Pro championship came down to the final round of the series.

Hoosier's #038 Michael Coburn did everything he could to defend his title in the final round by claiming the win, but it wasn't enough with Harold Goodman edging him out in the points race to wrap-up an exciting season of racing
The excellent track conditions provided Michael Coburn with the edge he was looking for as he charged off the start in the Pro main event. Coburn, who took the win and recorded the fastest time in the Pro heat race, followed it up by grabbing the holeshot in the main event. Coburn was in the lead, but he was not alone as Harold Goodman was right behind him and pressuring for the lead. Goodman stayed close and challenged Coburn late in the race, but a mistake from Goodman sent him back, giving Coburn an advantage, and allowed Coburn to hold the lead and take the Pro main win. Coburn’s speed and impressive performance throughout the season earned him second overall in the pro points championship.

“First off, I have to congratulate Harold on taking the championship. It was a great season and I had a lot of fun racing with him. This was a successful season for the series and we are hoping to make it even better next year as we will be making a few changes and adding some things we hope that everyone will like and draw in more people,” stated Michael Coburn.

Kirby Cooke was looking strong and fast in the Pro main event. Cooke was in the top five off the start and son found himself behind Harold Goodman in the number three spot. Cooke stayed close and in the final few laps, Cooke was able to get by when Goodman made a mistake. Cooke held on and took a solid second at the checkered flag, which would also secure him fifth place in the pro points chase.

Points leader Harold Goodman still needed to finish in the top five to claim the 2011 championship and was more than ready when he left the gate. Goodman was in the number two spot behind Michael Coburn and stayed close on Coburn’s bumper. Goodman was waiting for an opportunity to make a move for the lead and thought he had a good chance late in the race.
