San
Bernardino, CA (3/25/2007)
– The Opening Round of the ATVA National Motocross
Series kicked off a month later in Alabama instead of
out west in California as it has been for the past couple
of years, but racers didn’t have to wait long to
make the long journey west to conquer the hills of Glen
Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA as it was the second
stop of the twelve round series.

The later race date provided for much improved conditions
over the past couple of years at Glen Helen as it was
a perfect weekend for racing with temps in the 70’s
with a light breeze instead of the normal 50mph winds
during the month of February. The only downside was
the lack of attendance with nearly half as many riders
making the trip west, which lowered the attendance down
to just under 300 entries and among those were only
15 pro racers.
Among the Pros for Round Two were Team Kawasaki’s
Jason Luburgh & Josh Creamer making their 2007 ATV
racing debut on the all-new KFX450R, which began arriving
at dealership just two weeks ago across the country.
Kawasaki also brought out its Semi to showcase its new
ATV race team, which attracted a large crowd of spectators
all weekend catching a glimpse of the KFX450R.
Team MSR/Pro Taper/Suzuki/Yoshimura’s Doug Gust
& Dustin Wimmer rolled in with their freshly painted
semi, which now also includes RockStar Energy Drink
as Suzuki continues rally support for ATV racing. Yoshimura’s
Kory Ellis also made his season debut on his new Suzuki
ride with the race at his hometown track, but this will
most likely be his only appearance as he is focusing
on the Yamaha / ITP Quadcross Series for 2007 and a
few select WPSA events.

The field was stacked with red riders including, Joe
Byrd, John Natalie Jr, Keith Little, Harold Goodman,
Chad Wienen, and the surprise round one winner, Jeremy
Lawson. Many of the front runners including Byrd, Natalie,
Gust, and Wimmer ran into problems at round one, and
Jeremy Lawson wasted no time capitalizing on the situation
as he charged his way through the pack to earn his first
ever overall win in Alabama, but he would have his work
cut out for a repeat performance at Glen Helen with
Joe Byrd looking for a repeat of his own after winning
at Glen Helen in 2006 and eventually the Pro ATV Championship.
For those that did make the trip out west, they were
treated to longest track of the year with both Glen
Helen motocross tracks combined, which included some
high speed straight-aways and some monstrous hill climbs
with names like Mt. St. Helens, Mt. McKinley and Yamaha
Hill, which are nearly impossible to walk up or down
because they are so steep. The longer track also extended
the pro lap-times to an average of 3:20, which meant
for an only eight lap main event.
