2017 ATV Motocross Championship Awards Banquet

Sandusky, OH (11/19/2017) - Joel Hetrick celebrated what was likely the most memorable year of his life as he accepted the Gary Denton Motocross Cup for winning the 2017 AMA Pro Wiseco ATV Motocross National Championship presented by CST. He accepted the award at the cup and the #1 plate during the season ending banquet at the Kalahari Resort.

For Hetrick and for Pro ATV Motocross, it was a pivotal season. Hetrick married his longtime girlfriend Carlie this year, he was part of Team USA’s dominance of the QuadCross of Nations and he finally broke Chad Wienen’s streak of titles. The battles between Wienen and Hetrick were legendary this year, and are likely embedded in Hetrick’s memory.

“2017 was an amazing season,” said Hetrick. “Marrying Carlie, winning this championship and winning gold for Team USA, this year is going to be a hard one to top. 2018 is going to be a tough year, but I’m looking forward to it. Racing ATVs is what I do.”

It was really the accomplishment of a life’s work for Hetrick. Having started in the youth ranks, Hetrick stopped Wienen short of winning an unprecedented sixth consecutive National Championship this year. As he was accepting the cup, it was clear in Hetrick’s eyes just how much the title means to him.

“This is pretty emotional for me,” said Hetrick. “I’ve been racing all of my life. My grandpa bought me my first ATV when I was little. It was an LT80. I’ve seen this award being passed out my entire life. All of the names are on that trophy. To be a champion; I’ve wanted this so badly. This is something I will have for my entire life.”

While it wasn’t where Wienen wanted to finish this season, he praised Hetrick for his hard work. Wienen should know what it takes. More importantly, Wienen was happy that the battles he had on track with Hetrick and the trip to Italy for the QuadCross of Nations has elevated the sport of ATV motocross.

“Raising the level of the sport is really what this is all about,” said Wienen. “The fans gave us an extra push. Congratulations to Joel. He worked his butt off to get this championship. I have a few good years left and I’m sure there are going to be some serious battles. I’m excited for that and it’s going to be great for our sport.”

Thomas Brown finished third in points. The third member of Team USA, Brown was the standout of the trio during the European trip. Despite some midseason adversity, Brown came on strong late in the year. Capitalizing on bad luck by Jeffrey Rastrelli, he grabbed the final spot on the title podium at the last race.

“Being part of Team USA was a huge honor and was the biggest standout for me this season,” said Brown. “At the middle of the season, I got into a slump. We had to learn a few things and we pushed at the end of the season. This whole class was tough and I’m pumped. To be up here on the podium with these guys is a huge honor.”
