Mechanicsville,
MD
(5/5/2012) – Can-Am / Motoworks’
Joel Hetrick took the overall win at round number
three of the 2012 AMA ATV Motocross Championships
after Chad Wienen and John Natalie, Jr. each encountered
issues and settled for second and third on the pro
podium.
The rocky soils of Budd’s Creek awaited
racers for round number three and the conditions
were rough with plenty of breaking bumps and ruts
that gave racers a challenge. The action was intense
in the first moto as the battles raged and the
competition was incredibly close, but moto two
proved to be even more of a nail biter as the
battles continued with surprising results.

The
2012 AMA ATV Motocross Championship headed
to Budds Creek for round 3, which attracted
a large crowd of spectators out to watch
the racing action
|
All eyes were on Chad Wienen to see if he could
keep his winning streak alive after he swept all
four motos in the first two rounds and claimed
a good points lead over defending champ, John
Natalie, Jr. But as luck would have it, Wienen’s
winning streak would come to an end at the hands
of Joel Hetrick aka “Kid Dynamite”
as announcers have fondly dubbed him.

Motorsport's #20 Josh Upperman once grabbed
the Moto One holeshot followed closely
by Yamaha's #44 Chad Wienen
|
Can-Am/Motoworks’ Joel Hetrick was in third
off the start and immediately began to pressure
Chad Wienen on the first moto. Hetrick was hot
on Wienen’s heels when Wienen made his way
around Josh Upperman in the first lap. Hetrick
stayed close to the leader, and despite recording
the fastest lap time of the moto, was unable to
close in enough to make a move and settled in
for a second place finish.

Yamaha's
#44 Chad Wienen charged his way to the
front, but he wasn't alone with Can-Am's
#88 Joel Hetrick in chase nearly the entire
moto finishing right behind Wienen

“Moto one was good. Budds Creek isn’t
really my style so I just stayed behind Chad.
I wanted to get on the podium and not chance it
and risk losing points,” said Hetrick.
In the second moto, Hetrick was in fifth off
the start, right behind his teammate, John Natalie.
“We were mowing through guys in the second
moto and it was a really good race. All the fans
cheering us on was awesome,” said Hetrick.
Hetrick stayed close to Natalie and followed
his through traffic until reaching the number
two spot where he stayed all the way to the checkered
flag. Hetrick, who made it clear in an interview
earlier in the day, that Budds Creek isn’t
really suited to his style of riding, even surprised
himself after going 2-2 for the overall win.

Can-Am's
#88 Joel Hetrick finally managed to make
a pass stick on #44 Chad Wienen at Budds
Creek in moto 2 with Hetrick going on to
claim the 2nd spot, which was enough for
Hetrick to secure the overall win with his
2-2 finish |
“The track was knarly. After I got around
Chad I knew I had the overall win so I settled
down a bit. I’m really excited to get my
first win of the season, especially at Budds Creek
because it isn’t really my track, but it
paid off for me,”said Hetrick.
