Glamis, CA - Yamaha kicked off the
New Year with its fourth annual "Goons on Dunes"
Sport ATV Press Event, which is one of the most anticipated
press events of the year for many ATV journalists
lucky enough to be able to attend. It is far from
your typical press event because there isn’t
any one new model to throw a leg over, but instead
Yamaha showcases their complete lineup of full-size
Sport ATVs to the journalist for a few days of fun
in the sun at the famous Glamis Dunes.
In celebration of Yamaha’s 50th Anniversary,
Yamaha announced their limited edition Yellow/Black
lineup at the final round of the GNCC Series in
October, and these limited edition beauties official
release to the public was held in conjunction with
the Yamaha's Sport ATV Press Event.

Pat Brown throwing some serious roost on the
final production year of the Yamaha Banshee |
Upon arriving at the campsite, we were greeted
with what appeared to be an endless row of Limited
Edition Yamaha Sport ATVs sporting the classics
yellow/ black color scheme along with a few GYTR
models. There was the all new Raptor 700 with hybrid
frame and fuel injection system, which I couldn’t
wait try out in the sand. Also, there was the YFZ450
with it over eighty changes, and finally the legendary
Banshee, which will be discontinued from production
after 2006 because of new emission standards imposed
by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Banshee
was the only high performance sports ATV available
on the market for most of the 90’s, and after
over 20 years of production if will now become part
of ATV history.

Kory Ellis on his fully modified Yamahas Raptor
700 |
After a short introduction speech from Steve Nessl,
Yamaha ATV PR, everyone was cut loose to enjoy themselves
riding their Yamaha ATV of choice with Yamaha Factory
Rider’s Kory Ellis and Pat Brown, who were
also in attendance to demonstrate exactly what these
machines are capable of in the sand. For Pat Brown,
it was actually his first time at Glamis, and I
don't think that he will mind ever coming back again
because he seemed to really enjoy himself. Kory
Ellis on the other hand is a Glamis veteran since
he lives in California, so he brought out his own
rig to the press event along with his fully modified
Raptor 700 with all the goodies and ofcourse a set
of limited edition plastic. Riding with Kory and
Pat provides us (photojournalist) the prefect opportunity
to capture some incredible action shots of them
ripping up the sand and throwing some serious roost
in the process.

Yamaha's
Travis Hollins, Product Planning Manager,
proves he can do more than just make changes
to Yamaha's Production lineup |
We spent two days out in the dunes riding practically
all day long on the different Sport ATVs, and it was
great to finally have a chance to ride a Banshee in
the sand and with a handful of throttle it became
extremely clear why the Banshee is such a popular
ATV for sand riding because even with stock tires,
it had no trouble creating a impressive rooster tail.
The Raptor’s impressive torque showed itself
well in the sand as it had no trouble slicing a path
through across the dunes, and the YFZ450 provided
the all around great package for dunes riding with
its impressive acceleration and responsive handling.
At the end of the day, I was so exhausted I couldn't
wait to sit around the campfire and just relax,
and before I knew it, it was time to head home and
thank Steve Nessl for this incredible opportunity
and tell him, in lack of a better words, “I
had a Blast.”
