Wienen Motorsports / Yamaha's #1 Chad Wienen & Thomas Brown went 1-3 at AMA Pro ATV MX Round 4
|
Rossville, IN (5/13/2013) - Aboard his Wienen Motorsports YFZ450R, racer Chad Wienen took his second consecutive overall win and teammate Thomas Brown his third straight third- place finish in the fourth round of the 2013 AMA Pro ATV series in Rossville, Ind. on Saturday, May 11. Wienen, now the clear points leader in the AMA’s top ATV racing series, worked his magic with 3-1 moto finishes while Brown added 4-4 motos for the day. The championship got a further shakeup when rival Joel Hetrick, currently tied with Brown for second in points, crashed in the second moto, unfortunately suffering a reported broken collarbone. The series next moves northwest to Walnut, Ill. on May 25-26. In other ATV racing news over the weekend, Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson grabbed a third in Pro ATV at the WORCS off-road race in Taft, Calif., also aboard a YFZ450R.

#1 Chad Wienen holds down a 26 point lead after Wildcat Creek MX Round 4

Wienen and Brown found the weather cool and dry – perfect for racing at Wildcat Creek MX. After getting a poor start near the tail end of the top 10, Wienen knew he’d have to race hard to protect his points lead. Yet he did exactly that, leaping to fifth by the end of the first lap, climbing to fourth on lap three, and then passing into podium position with five laps remaining. Brown’s first-moto start wasn’t any better, and he trailed Wienen during his subsequent charge through the pack, a position or two behind the whole way. Near the end of the race Brown made a pass for fourth, giving Yamaha 3-4 finishes for the first moto and setting up a pressure-cooker of a second moto. “Despite my bad start, the YFZ was working great out on the track and I was able to maneuver it how I needed,” Wienen said.

#1 Chad Wienen still holds down the AMA ATV MX Points lead after round 3

Moto two started vastly better for both Yamaha riders with Brown grabbing his first career AMA Pro ATV holeshot. But his teammate was close behind, and in fact Wienen passed Brown on the first lap to take the lead. The defending series champion then checked out, leading every lap and building up a comfortable 9.6- second advantage at the flag. Meanwhile Brown quickly came under pressure, trading paint with rival Joe Byrd on lap three and flying off the track, losing numerous positions. Fortunately he was able to recover, and his eventual fourth- place finish gave him third overall for the day.
“My starts are something I have always worked on so it was a really good feeling grabbing the holeshot,” Brown said. Wienen added, “I am really happy I was able to start towards the front, pass for the lead early on, and get that top spot on the box again today.”
