ATVs Win GNCC & Yamaha Quad X Series Yamaha's Traci Cecco &
Dustin Nelson Take Wins About YFZ450R/X
Yamaha's
Traci Cecco Takes her first 2011 GNCC
season win at Steele Creek
Cypress, CA (3/28/2011) - Yamaha ATVs swept
to a trio of key wins in GNCC and Yamaha/QuadX
competition over the March 26-27 weekend. On Saturday
morning, Traci Cecco started the streak by scoring
her first Women’s class win of the year
aboard her YFZ450X in the third round of the 2011
GNCC off-road series in Morganton, North Carolina,
while Walker Fowler and Gabe Phillips followed
up with a 1-2 sweep of the afternoon XC2 Pro Am
race. Then on Sunday, Dustin Nelson flew his YFZ450R
to 1-1 moto wins to claim overall victory in the
first round of the 2011 Yamaha/QuadX series in
San Bernardino, Calif.
As usual, the GNCC Women’s class featured
heated competition, and on Saturday Cecco became
the third different winner this season. The
first of five laps became a dogfight between
Cecco and Yamaha-mounted Kristen Atwell, until
Atwell faltered on lap two and handed Cecco
the lead – and ultimately the win over
rivals Lexie Coulter and Angel Atwell. While
in the afternoon XC2 Pro Am race, Fowler made
it three victories in a row by quickly moving
from third to first on the second of five laps
and then winning by a comfortable minute and
a half over Phillips, who also had moved through
the field from fifth. Yamaha-mounted Matt Hanna
finished fourth, giving Yamaha three of the
top four positions in class.
Spring rains in California turned Glen Helen
Raceway into a muddy mess for the Yamaha/QuadX
event. The narrow course and heavy roost made
it essential to get in front immediately, and
Nelson did just that in the first moto, gradually
building up a sizeable lead over second-place
Beau Baron for the win. Then in moto two, Baron
took the holeshot and led until getting sideways
and allowing Nelson past. Once in the lead,
Nelson worked hard to stay ahead until Baron
made another mistake on the last lap, giving
Nelson a comfortable win. “My YFZ was
super easy to ride in the mud,” he reported
later. “It has a ton of power, but it
rolls on smoothly, so it’s strong and
controllable.” Yamaha ATV racing coordinator
Donnie Luce added, “Dustin rode like a
champion today. This is definitely an excellent
start to the season.”
