Winning Weekend
for Yamaha ATVs at Quadcross & NEATV-MX
Dunk Wins Round 5 ITP
Quadcross - Thomas Brown Wins Pro / Pro-AM NEATV-MX
Cypress, CA (7/12/2010)
- YZ and YFZ450s Dominate the Weekend
Yamaha YFZ450 ATVs and YZ450F motocrosssers had
a winning weekend, dominating races in California,
Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia on Sunday,
July 11. Jason Dunkelberger, Justin Noss and Jason
Fife swept the podium in the fifth round of the
2010 ITP QuadCross series in San Bernardino, Calif.
aboard their YFZ450Rs, while Thomas Brown also
won both Pro and Pro Am classes in a New England
ATV motocross race in Pennsylvania. Next up, Paul
Whibley won the OMA Nationals race in Mesick,
Mich. in his very first event aboard a new 2010
YZ450, while Barry Hawk likewise grabbed a win
in West Virginia, also his first aboard a new
YZ450F.
The ITP QuadCross event at Glen Helen Raceway
in California initially looked like the fourth
sweep in a row for Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson
on his YFZ450R. He won the first 20-minute moto
and holeshotted the second moto before a blown
fuse brought him into the pits for a quick repair.
That left rival Beau Baron temporarily in the
lead, but Baron likewise pitted with a flat tire,
which in turn promoted eventual winner Dunkelberger
into the lead. “Dunk” never missed
a beat, leading a Yamaha freight train including
Noss and Fife to the flag for the dramatic blue-and-white
1-2-3 sweep – and his first ITP QuadCross
overall win of the year. In other ATV competition,
Jeff Pickens and Brandon Sommers finished first
and second on their YFZs at the special AWRCS
100-mile woods race in Boyers, Penn.
AmPro Yamaha’s Whibley and Hawk are both
regular competitors in the GNCC motorcycle XC1
Pro division. But with the popular cross-country
series on summer break, the pair hopped aboard
YZ450Fs for their first races aboard the new model,
with Whibley in Michigan and Hawk a day’s
drive to the southeast in West Virginia. Whibley
and the rest of the OMA pro racers faced dusty
conditions that made visibility and passing difficulty
on the long off-road course. Though he started
near the back of the pack, Whibley used his championship
skills – and his new YZ450F – to work
his way through the field, eventually breaking
into the lead and then cruising home for the win.
