Cypress, CA (3/15/2010) - Three-time
ITP QuadCross champion Dustin Nelson kicked off
the 2010 season with a pair of podiums at Glen
Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif. on Sunday,
March 14. Under windy conditions that made leaping
Glen Helen’s big jumps hugely exciting,
Nelson scored twin second-place finishes in the
Pro Production class aboard his Yamaha factory
YFZ450R to take second overall behind rival Josh
Creamer. Fellow YFZ pilots Jason Dunkleberger,
Jason Fife and Justin Noss finished fourth, fifth
and seventh overall, respectively. Making the
day even better for Yamaha, Dunkleberger went
on to win the Open Pro class aboard another YFZ450R
with perfect 1-1 moto finishes.
Nelson started the first moto in third behind
Creamer and Noss. He took two laps to work his
way past Noss, only to find that Creamer had
built up a sizable six-second advantage. Nelson
chipped away at this margin for the duration
of the 20-minute moto but ended up four seconds
in arrears at the flag. “I just ran out
of time in that first moto,” Nelson said
afterwards. “Glen Helen is often windy
but this time it was really gnarly. We are pretty
stable in the wind, but over jumps it was still
moving us from one side of the track to the
other. It was definitely sketchy.”
In the second moto Nelson started fifth behind
Creamer, Noss, Beau Baron and Dunkleberger.
He picked off two riders on the first lap, but
it took most of the race to advance into second
place, once again behind Creamer. “I was
really happy with the 450R’s handling
and that I was able to come through the pack
on a rough track,” he added. “I
was frustrated by not getting goods starts because
that’s what it takes to win – but
that’s not the bike’s fault. The
concrete gate pad made the starts difficult
and I need to work on them. Anyway I’m
looking forward to the next race in four weeks!”
