Kristen
Atwell Won The Morning Race Overall while
aboard her Yamaha YFZ450 |
Cypress, CA (9/27/2010) - Aboard
her YFZ450, Kristen Atwell won her fifth GNCC
ATV race of the season in Lafayette, Tenn. on
Saturday morning, Sept. 25. The win puts Atwell
on top of the ultra-competitive Women’s
ATV title chase with two rounds left to go. Fellow
Yamaha riders Traci Cecco and Jennifer Albright
finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and just
five points now separate the top three contenders.
In the afternoon races, a Yamaha freight train
headed by Brian Wolf swept the top four positions
in the XC2 Pro Am class. And finally, Yamahas
also took four of the top eight positions in the
afternoon XC1 Pro class, led by Taylor Kiser in
second.
In the morning Women’s race, YFZ-mounted
Atwell and rival Lexie Coulter raced through
the grueling two-hour competition separated
by no more than a few seconds – and in
some cases less than a second. Wins are especially
critical with the final battles for the championship
now looming, and clear of the rest of the field,
the pair swapped the lead right into the last
lap – and then into the last few minutes
of the event. Seemingly at the last moment though,
Atwell gunned her Yamaha ahead for the win.
“I got cut off by a lapper and Lexie got
around me," Atwell explained. "Fortunately
I was able to get her back with just two miles
left in the race!"
Wolf’s afternoon XC2 Pro Am victory was
unusual in that he normally rides a competing
brand. But after Wolf’s three-year-old flooded
his bike’s exhaust system with a garden
hose on Friday, Yamaha XC1 Pro competitor Brandon
Sommers stepped up to kindly loan Wolf his YFZ450X
practice bike. Amazingly, in the race Wolf then
proceeded to lead three of the four grueling laps
to take the win over the Yamaha-mounted trio of
Gabe Phillips, Eric Hoyland and Kevin Yoho. "I
can't thank Brandon Sommers enough," Wolf
said after the event. "The bike was phenomenal."
