In preparation for Round Two of the ATVA MX Nationals scheduled for February 11-12th, the TQRA hosted its National Warm-Up at the Oak Hill MX Park on January 14-15th, which was the first time that there has ever been an all ATV event at this premiere race facility known as the country club of motocross in Texas. With extensive planning by TQRA President, Robb Blackard and Track Manager, Craig Martin, the event was a huge success and attracted just under 200 racers and some of the fastest Pro ATV racers from around the country with many traveling over a thousand miles to compete in the event. There was a full gate for the Pro Main with top Pros Dustin Wimmer, Jason Dunkelberger, Matt White, Chad Wienen, Josh Creamer, Nate Frees, Bobby Ross, and Johnny Hale in attendance along with local favorites Cody & Hunter Miller who have established a name for themselves on a National level.

Expert Moto One
In the first Moto, Cody Miller pulled the Holeshot, but it wouldn't take long before Dustin Wimmer and Chad Wienen moved in behind him in the lead. As the front three pulled away from the pack, Jason Dunkelberger worked his way up from ninth into fourth, but he remained over five seconds behind the lead pack.

Dustin Wimmer was applying the pressure to Cody Miller, and in an attempt to make the pass he took the alternative outside berm turn while Cody Miller followed by Chad Wienen stayed on the inside over the single jump. The move backfired as Wimmer actually lost a position when Wienen was able to squeeze himself in between Wimmer and Miller and take over the second spot.

The Texan, Cody Miller, would hold on to take the win with Chad Wienen finishing in second followed by Dustin Wimmer rounding out the top three.

Expert Moto Two

In the second Moto, Chad Wienen pulled a monster Holeshot and with clean air ahead of him, he quickly pulled away from everyone on this extremely fast track. Dustin Wimmer would work his way up through the pack and into second place, but not before Chad Wienen had checked out and would go on to win the second Moto and the overall with his 2-1 finish. Dustin Wimmer would take the runner up spot followed by Cody Miller in third overall after his fifth place finish in the moto two. Matt White would finish in fourth with a 6-3 day followed by Jason Dunkelberger who finished in sixth in the second moto after experiencing clutch issues.

For those lucky enough to attend the TQRA Warm-Up, they enjoyed an exciting weekend of ATV racing and had a chance to hone their skills on the Oak Hills MX track before the ATVA MX National in less than a month.

After the race, we spoke with Jason Dunkelberger and Dustin Wimmer to get the low down on their thoughts on the Oak Hill MX Facility, and here is what they had to say about this exciting new location on the ATVA MX National schedule.

ATVriders:What is your first impression of the Oak Hill MX park after racing the TQRA National Warm-Up?
Jason Dunkelberger: The facility is incredible with hookups at every parking space around the track, and the track is really nice as well, but not very technical. There aren’t any monster jumps either that are do or die. The biggest jump is table top/double which is about 75 feet long. There is one nasty set of whoops that are really killer, and that will be the spot on the track where there will be plenty of passing going on. For passing there are also about six turns that have alternative lines with the choice of either a big single on the inside or a higher speed berm to the outside, but the speed through either one is almost identical with the inside singles being just a little bit quicker because the berms on the outside just weren’t tall enough for us to rail around them quick enough, but these alternative lines could make the difference when trying to pass a slower rider, which is really nice. All and all the track and facility is great, but they really just need to disc it before the National because the great dirt on top was quickly blown off the track which left a hard packed clay surface below, which became blue grooved similar to the Gatorback track, but otherwise it is a great track and everyone should enjoy it if they disc the track before the National. Otherwise it will become nasty before the end of the weekend because it is way more hard packed than sand.

These photos demonstrate how the great dirt on top was blown off the track, which revealed the hard-packed clay surface below

What are you going to be doing between now and the Nationals?
Dustin Wimmer and I are headed down to Houston to hang out with John Natalie’s Mechanic, Dee Manshack, and practice at the Splendora Motocross Park for a few days and John Natalie Jr. is supposes to be arriving sometime this week, and also Nate Frees is heading down for some practice as well.

What did you think of the Oak Hill MX Track?
Dustin Wimmer: It’s a fun track, and it was technical in spots because there are some step-up jumps, which aren’t really designed for quads because the face of them are only like two feet high, so we have to hit them five times harder to clear the lip. The whoops are really good, and I would consider them the best set of whoops of all of our National tracks put together. Also, it was wide enough for passing on most of the track, but in some sections it was a little narrow. The dirt is pretty good, but just like Jason said, they need to groom it a little differently for us, and they need to disc it up, definitely, they need to get down into that hard packed dirt and disc it into the dirt on top.

What do you think will be the biggest factor in deciding the winner for Round Two of the ATVA MX National at Oak Hill MX?
The Holeshot will definitely be important and those whoops along with picking the right lines at the right time with make the difference

How did you feel out on the track this weekend?
I felt really good, but my hands got a little cramped up and that’s about it.
