Galena, IL (5/26/2011) - Steel
City was the host venue for Round 6 of the AMA Pro
ATV Motocross Championships. After winning both
motos at Sunset Ridge and reclaiming the points
lead Chad Wienen was poised to build upon that lead
at Round 6. In practice Wienen continue his streak
of fastest qualifier awards. Other than winning
the overall his main focus for the weekend was good
starts.
In moto one Wienen pulled the SSi Decals holeshot
on his Motoworks powered Can Am and set a blistering
pace early and rode to a relatively easy win.
Thomas Brown fought hard the entire moto narrowly
being edged for second, finishing third. Nick
DeNoble rounded out the top 5 with a very strong
ride and showed he was ready to turn heads again
at Round 6. Josh Upperman was riding strong early
in the moto in what was an epic four way battle
for the second spot. Unfortunately a crash set
him back but he was able to get going again and
finish the moto 9th. Joel Hetrick was in the battle
for 2nd early in the moto before a mechanical
issue slowed him causing him to finish 16th in
the moto.
Going into moto 2 Wienen was ready to show that
the moto 1 holeshot was not a fluke. However,
after finishing the site lap a problem with the
ECU brought an abrupt and early end to his day.
This time is was DeNoble who ripped the holeshot
and was ready to show that with a good start he
can run at the front of the pack. Unfortunately
a mechanical ended his run for the overall four
laps into the race. This opened the door for Brown
who was now running second. He did was he could
but just couldn’t make the pass for the
first spot. He finished the day 3-2 claiming 2nd
overall, his best finish of the season. Upperman
backed up his 9th in moto 1 with a 3rd to claim
5th overall. Hetrick put in a strong ride in moto
2 finishing 6th.
Steel City Run Down: T.O.P. trained riders results:
Wienen- 1st in Moto 1, Moto 1SSi Holeshot winner,
and fastest qualifier , Brown - 2nd overall, Upperman
- 3rd in Moto 2 and 5th overall, DeNoble - Moto
2 SSi Holeshot winner and 5th in Moto 1.
Pro Motorsports Jesse Barnes broke his finger
in Round 5 at Sunset Ridge. He was only able to
ride once between rounds but worked extra hard
on his strength and conditioning between rounds
to compensate for little seat time. He was able
to ride strong all weekend despite pain in his
hand and never once felt fatigue while riding.
His strong performances on the weekend earned
him 6th overall in both Pro Am Unlimited and Pro
Am Production. He will have more seat time between
rounds and is looking forward to mixing it up
in the sand in Millville, MN at round 7.
Canadian Bryan Vollmer celebrated his 18th birthday
on US soil at Steel City. His efforts for the
weekend earned him 3rd overall in the Production
B class and 7th in the College 16-24 class. Vollmer
now sits 16 points ahead of second in the Production
B class and will look to build on his lead at
Millville.
