Sweep Sunset Ridge MX Podium
AMA
ATV Pro Motocross Championship – Round 5
– Sunset Ridge MX – May 7, 2011
Galena, IL (5/11/2011) - Round
5 was hosted at Sunset Ridge in Walnut, Illinois.
Chad Wienen considers this his local track and
had his sights set on taking the win in front
of his hometown fans. In the first pro practice
Saturday morning T.O.P. rider Joel Hetrick set
the fastest lap followed by T.O.P. riders Josh
Upperman and Wienen. The track was run in and
much faster for the second practice.

Wienen claimed his 5th consecutive fastest qualifier
award running about 5 seconds faster than he did
in the first practice. When the brand new gate
fell in the first moto Hetrick grabbed the holeshot.
Wienen worked his way into second place quickly
and within a few laps put a pass on the rookie.
Hetrick held his own with the veteran racers finishing
the moto 3rd followed by Josh Upperman. Thomas
Brown finished 6th after a very hard fought battle.
Nick DeNoble rode his Honda to 8th in moto 1.
Hetrick pulled another holeshot in Moto 2 and
continued to show veteran poise despite pressure
from Wienen and Natalie. As he did in the first
race Wienen was patient and made his passes when
he could. Once out front he rode to another moto
win. Hetrick held strong and was running 3rd when
Natalie had a misfortune ending his moto early.
This would lead to T.O.P. riders Hetrick, Upperman
and Brown to finish the moto 2nd, 3rd & 4th
respectively. DeNoble finished 8th again in moto
2 and is looking forward to getting back on the
podium at Steel City.
Sunset Ridge Run Down: T.O.P. trained riders
swept the podium at Sunset Ridge and claimed the
top 4 spots on the weekend: 1st and fastest qualifier
- Wienen, 2nd and winner of both SSi Decals Holeshot
Awards – Hetrick, 3rd – Upperman,
4th - Brown. Nick DeNoble finished the weekend
9th overall..
Pro Am rider Jesse Barnes had another strong
showing in the Unlimited class on Saturday. He
rode to a strong 3rd in the first moto. After
pulling the holeshot on his Pro Motorsports Yamaha
in moto 2 he finished 4th. His consistent 3-4
earned him 4th overall. In the Pro Am Production
class on Sunday Barnes claimed 9th overall. In
a bizarre second moto Barnes injured his hand
when a pile up occurred right in front of the
mechanics area. Another competitor’s wheel
smashed his clutch lever into his hand causing
a possible dislocation of his pinky finger. Barnes
put the pain aside and was running strong in the
5th spot until another crash in front of him caused
him to come to a halt. Once going again he did
all he could to finish the moto.
Bryan Vollmer backed up his 1-1 in the Production
B class in Maryland with another 1-1 at Sunset
Ridge. Vollmer pulled both holeshots and walked
away from the field en route to his second win
of the season and the lead in championship points.
With ever increasing confidence aboard his Baldwin
Motorsports Honda we expect great things out of
him throughout the rest of the season.
West Coast:
Matt Hancock has continued to show that T.O.P.
Performance Training will help all racers not
to motocross riders. He recently took 2nd and
3rd in his WORCS B class racers. He was able to
run his fastest lap on the last lap in both races.
Hancock along with his partner, Josh Edwards,
won the Expert ATV class in the Bilek Silver State
300 with a time of 6 hours 28 minutes. After the
race Hancock said he felt great from all of the
training he has been doing.
