Can-Am
/ Motoworks' Josh Frederick getting
interviewed after winning the SCORE
San Felipe 250 Pro ATV Class 25 with
his teammate Dillon Zimmerman |
Vista, CA (3/15/2012) –
The Can Am/Motoworks team of Josh Frederick
and Dillon Zimmerman conquered the Mexican desert
as they charged their way to the top of the
podium in the Pro ATV Class 25 at the 2012 SCORE
San Felipe 250 desert race.
While Josh Frederick is no stranger to the
SCORE series and its races, this was the first
time for Dillon Zimmerman to take part. “It
was a really great experience! I was really
impressed by the culture down there and how
many fans of racing there are. You could be
out in the middle of nowhere and all of a
sudden come up on a big group of local spectators
out there cheering you on. It was really cool!”
said Zimmerman.
One good reason for the fans to cheer on
the Can-Am/Motoworks team was that even though
they were one of the last teams to be let
off the start, they took over the Class 25
physical lead before the 95 mile marker. “I
started the race and by the time I handed
the quad over to Dillon at the 95 mile mark,
we already had a good lead over everyone,”
stated Josh Frederick.
Dillon Zimmerman rode from mile 95 to the
170 mile mark, one of the roughest sections
of the course. The Can-Am DS450 the team was
running was basically set up the same as what
the team uses during the WORCS races, but
with a little taller DWT tire, to give a bit
more ground clearance, which is definitely
needed for some sections of the challenging
course. “It was really rocky and there
were lots of washes and technical sections,
especially in the section I was running. About
50 miles from the 170 marker, I hit a big
rock. Somehow it damaged the latch for the
seat and my seat came off so I ended up riding
for 50 miles with no seat. It was a little
rough!” Zimmerman explained.
Despite not having a seat, Zimmerman powered
through his section and made it to the check
point, still in the lead, where he handed
the DS450 off to Josh Frederick to run the
final stretch of the race.
“I got back on and was having a really
good run. At about 80 miles from the finish
I crashed. The only damage to the quad was
a bent sprocket,” said Frederick, who
improvised by using a rock to bend the sprocket
back into place.
Even with the bent sprocket, Frederick never
lost his lead and was able to cruise to the
checkered flag with more than a 12 minute
lead over his nearest competitor. The team
averaged a speed of 41.22 MPH and finished
the race with a time of 6:01:53. “We
had a great time down here and we have to
thank Can-Am, Motoworks and all of our sponsors
for everything they have done to help make
this a successful race for us. We will be
racing the Baja 500 for sure and we are hoping
to win that as well,” stated Frederick.
The annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 is scheduled
for June 1st – 3rd in Ensenada, Baja
Mexico where the Can-Am/Motoworks team will
again be going for the Pro ATV win.
