SCORE Baja 1000

Washougal, WA (11/16/2010) -
After months of preparation, training, and planning
Team Moto X Nutrition Pro Caliber are ready for
SCORE’s biggest challenge: the Baja 1000.
Riders Brandon Brown, Kenny Sanford, Jorie Williams,
Mike Kelley, Mike Bender, & Nick Nelson will
head down to Mexico with family and friends to
begin pre-running and final preparations before
the race next week. This year’s race brings
extra challenges being a point-to-point race from
Ensenada to La Paz and boasting of racers from
15 countries and more than 30 states. SCORE anticipates
over 250,000 spectators for this world-famous
event, and Team Moto X Nutrition Pro Caliber doesn’t
want to disappoint.
“Testing went really well,” Team
Coordinator Brandon Brown said, “We’ve
been training hard with help from Christian
and Jeremy at Moto X Nutrition and Universal
Human Athletics. Our bike is solid with the
diligent work from Kenny at S&S Motorsports
and we’ve had a successful season so far,
so I’m looking forward to this race.”
Currently, Team Moto X Nutrition Pro Caliber
is leading Class 24 in points and drew 2nd off
the line for the 1000. “A good draw for
starting position is key,” explained Brandon,
and even though they have had less than desirable
starts earlier in the year they have finished
strong with a win at the San Felipe 250 and
2nd at the Baja 500. The team is optimistic
going into the 1000 with a solid points lead!
Chief mechanic Kenny Sanford of S&S Motorsports
in Puyallup, Washington pulled doubled duty
at the 500 by pitting for the team and also
riding a section of the course. Kenny again
will put in work pitting for the riders, riding
a section and was responsible for the build
of the 1000 bike. “The bike is just amazing
this year. Kenny’s worked really hard
and I’m expecting the bike to perform
as well as it did in testing, and there’s
no reason it shouldn’t, ” Brandon
said. Provided by Pro Caliber Motorsports in
Vancouver, Washington, their weapon of choice
is a TRX450R. “It’s a very detailed
build with hours and hours spent making sure
every part fits and functions. We are required
to finish 1000-plus miles, and we put together
a bike that’s fully capable of finishing
in front, which is where we all hope to see
it at the end of the race!” Kenny said.
This year’s historic 43rd anniversary
race takes place November 16th through the 20th.
The motorcycles and ATVs will start leaving
the line at 6:30AM on Thursday, November 18th.
Tech inspection and pre-race festivities will
take place the day before on the 17th. It is
the first time since 2006 that the race has
finished in La Paz, and only half of the racers
finished that year, so fans and racers can expect
attrition to play a major part in how contenders
will finish this year. It makes preparations
much more vital. When asked about the preparations,
Brandon Brown said, “Racing such a long
distance is much different than on a small track
with a designated pitting area in the same spot
and the same terrain lap after lap where you
have parts ready and waiting. When you are out
in the desert, alone, with nothing but you,
the bike, and whatever terrain and weather comes
along, you really have to step your focus up
and push hard to persevere. There are a lot
of things that can get you in the desert, and
we’ve worked really hard to make sure
that it’s not ourselves or the machine.”
Christian from Moto X Nutrition described the
team’s fitness program, “We have
designed a program that is tough and designed
to push them physically and mentally, and the
Baja demands both, which will help these guys
use 100% of their talent all the way to the
checkered flag.” Christian’s extensive
knowledge of fitness, nutrition, and experience
riding a quad should help give Team Moto X Nutrition
Pro Caliber a clear advantage on the race course.
Last year the team finished with a 2nd place
for the season after having poor luck at the
1000 which put them at a points disadvantage
at the series end. As any desert racer can tell
you, anything can happen in Baja. For Team Moto
X Nutrition Pro Caliber, “anything”
is going to be pouring every last ounce of determination
and heart into this final race. This is the
team’s blood and sweat making their 2010
SCORE season come together.
The bike built for the 1000 is graced with parts
from Texeira Tech, Fox Racing Shox, Precision
Racing products, Maxxis, HMF, HiPer, Tire Balls,
Quadtech, Blingstar, Fullbore Innovations, PWR,
IMS, Rekluse, Spider Grips, Maxima, UNI, Powermadd,
Wiseco, Crower Performance, UPP, Trail Tech,
custom fabrication from Hot Rod Fabrication,
and of course, S&S Motorsports. The riders
will be graced with gear from Klim & Scott,
and training from Moto X Nutrition and Universal
Human Athletics, and the team received support
from Water Well Developing, Team Money$hot,
& Kelley Blocks. Look for the 102A in the
dirt and at the finish in this year’s
Baja 1000, or follow them on Facebook.
